The 10th annual Grand Bend canoe race will be held
Sunday in conjunction with the weekend Burgerfest
Days at the summer resort.
Sponsored jointly by the Ausable-Bayfield Conser-
vation Authority and the Grand Bend Chamber of Com-
merce, the race is split into nine divisions with the star-
ting and finishing points at the south Side of the river
at the lakefront in Grand Bend.'
The kayak and senior men's events go a distance of
16 miles with all others going eight miles. The only ex-
ception is the event open to handicapped persons. It goes
about a milefrom the edge of the lake to the Highway
21 bridge in Grand Bend and return.
Anyone wishing further information on the races
should contact secretary Helen Boogemans in Hensall
at 262-2439 or the Ausable-Bayfield Conservation office
at 235-2610.
Official animal
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has
petitioned Premier William Davis asking that an official
animal be named for the province of Ontario to go with
the white pine, white trillium and the amethyst as of-
ficial emblems of the province.
The moose is the animal proposed by the anglers
and hunters. The accompanying press release states,
"The moose is Ontario's lar=gest indigenous animal, a
strong and vital link with our heritage and clearly wor-
thy of the greatest distinction. To many people, moose,
wilderness and Ontario are synonymous.
The Ontario Federation of Afiglers and Hunters
with 46,000 members is Ontario's largest provincial con-
servation organization.
This group has also forwarded a resolution to -the
Ministry of Natural Resources asking that the wearing
of hunters' blaze orange be mandatory during the gun
hunting seasons for big game, upland game -and small
game.
They ask for a minimum of 500 square inches of
blaze orange to be worn on the back, chest and head of
hunters saying this amount of illumination will. cut ac-
cidents by 75 percent.
Cloak and dagger'tactics
When next year's National Hockey League draft ap-
pears on national television probably on the first Satur-
day in June, one of the 21 clubs will have to be very
original to upstage the Montreal Canadiens on Satur-
day's show.
The Canadiens newest general manager Serge
Savard kept a guest underne4 stands of the Montreal
Forum until 3:22 Saturday afternoon when he surpris-
ed the gathered crowd and thousands of others on the
- picture media by selecting Petra Svoboda from
Czechoslovakia.
Svoboda was so new to Canada having arrived in
Montreal Friday that the only English words he knew
were Coca-Cola.
He actually defected from his home country in mid-
April by simply walking out of the arena in Badholz,
West Germany and after staying with an unidentified
friend of an American born hockey coach Craig Sarner,
the young Czech settled with an aunt in Munich.
The big battle for Svoboda's services was apparent-
ly between Montreal and the Calgary Flames. Cliff Flet-
cher of Calgary said his'team virtually baby sat the
young Svoboda for 30 days and eventually secured an
agreement saying he would come to North America if
drafted by the Flames.
The Canadiens who had the number five choice
compared to 12 for Calgary were much more deman-
ding and explicit. Savard insisted he would be drafted
only if he was actually in Montreal on the day of the
draft, eliminating any possible red tape problems get-
ting into the country.
