PETER MARTIN -The United Church Women met in the Sunday School rooms on Thursday evening. The girls from Explorers entertained. Each recited one verse from the Lord's Prayer followed by the singing of Lord's Prayer. The girls have been studying the Lord's Prayer during their meetings. The girls were presented with their stars and diplomas. Lunch was served by Velma . Russell, Norma Fahner, Clara Ratz and Elva Lamport. The business meeting was conducted by president Marie Fydenchuk. Cookies and freshie will again be served for Vacation Bible School this summer. Pastoral care for children was read by`Marie Fyden- chuk and Lelia Finkbeiner reported on Westminster weekend. Everyone enjoyed a lively sports program conducted by Earl and Margaret and fami- ly. A delicious smorgasbord supper and wiener roast was enjoyed by all. President Helen Ratz presided for the business. Wayne Ratz, as _ chairman, conducted the election of officers as follows for 1985: President, Helen Jamieson, Thedford; secretary and treasurer, Alma Godbolt, Ex- eter; sports committee, Eleanor Sharpe and Gertrude Ratz, both of London. Mrs. Mabel Guenther at- tended the spring convocation at the University of Western Ontario, Saturday, when her daughter Karen graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in administrative and commercial studies. Karen majored in Finance and economics. - A friend, Steven Veal, who graduated Tuesday June 12 with'honours in his Bachelor of Arts also attended Karen's graduation. Stephen Keller, four-ypar- olii son of John and Beverley Keller, underwent corrective eye surgery, Wednesday at Victoria Hospital, London. Stephen is home again and do- ing fine. Mrs. Roy Kirk of Moorefield, Beverley's mother, spent a few days with the family here last week. A number from this area called at the "Open House" held Sunday at Zion Lutheran church, Dashwood, to con- gratulate Oscar and Laura Miller, on their 50th wedding anniversary. Saturday afternoon, I at- tended an 80th birthday par- ty for my cousin, Mrs. Ruby Hoggarth of Bluewater Rest Home, held at the home of her son, Al and Margaret and family in the Kippen area. Weekend guests with Fer- man and Leota Snyder were Rev. and Mrs. H. Steinke from the First Church of God in Toronto. Sports The Squirts softball team played a game last Tuesday at Bell Aerospace. SUMMERS Unit 1 of the Granton U.C.W.,met at the home of Mrs. Audrey Harloff on June 7. Mrs. Doreen . McRobert presided and- opened the meeting with a hymn 297 followed by Scripture and a reading entitled "Laugh along with God." There was quite a number of business items to be. discussed and taken care of; this included the upcoming ham and strawberry supper, June 26 in the Granton park building. All Church members will have tickets to sell. The program was convened by Mrs. Doreen McRobert who took her message from the study book "Nameless faces in the life of Jesus". This referred to the boy who offered Jesus his "Five Barley Loaves and Two Fishes". Jesus performed a miracle and fed 5,000 people. the boy's name was not men- tioned; in the book he is just called the "Barley Boy". Lunch turned out to be a Surprise birthday party for Miss Mabel McNaughton who is celebrating her 90th birth day this month. On Wednesday evening Unit 3 gathered at the home o Mrs. Wilfred Garrett before proceeeding to the Special Abilities Riding Institute (S.A.R.I.) west of Arva. Mrs: Greenburg, founder o' S.A.R.I. explained the history and purpose of the school and showed a video tape to further explain the need that S.A.R.I. fills for handicapped children. Riding lessons had been cancelled for the evening because of the threat of rain but we were given an in- teresting tour of the riding arena and the stables. We returned to Mrs. Gar- rett's home for a short business meeting and a meditation bed by Mrs. Robt. Garrett and Mrs. Chas. Hayden on a Father's Day theme. Lunch was served by Mrs. Fred Cook and Mrs. Cliff Cook. Unit 4 met at the home of Mrs. Tom Gagan on June 6. Mrs. Gary Humphrey presid- ed and opened the meeting with the Scripture, followed by a meditation on "God's Timetable" and two short poems. Mrs. Elmer Harlton was in charge of the program and in- troduced Mrs. Robt. Harloff the guest speaker who gave a presentation from the Study - Book "Jesus means life". This was on the chapter "Life with the Good People". This f referred to the priests, Sad- ducees,_ Scribes and Pharesees. Mrs. Harloff il- lustrated her talk with miniature models of these three groups, she also used nursery rhymes to depict these characters. The program concluded with everyone taking part in a dialogue "partner finding". Mrs. McRobert closed the meeting with the Lords Prayer. Mrs. Malcom Spence assisted the hostess to serve a tasty lunch. • Church News At the Granton United Church the Rev. Bruce Pierce was in charge of the worship on Pentecost Sunday and the service of Holy Communion. The minister entitled his message "You are cordially invited". To refuse this invita- tion is inexcusable, we have to be convinced in our own mind that whatever we are doing is right. At God's table everyone is accepted, the good, and the bad: God issues a cordial in- vitation to all to share and gather around His Commu- nion table, said the minister. At the St. Thomas Anglican Church the Rev. Peter Der- rick was in charge of the Mor- ning Prayer Service assisted by David Jones as the Crucifer and Lois Herbert as the pianist. The two lessons were read by Susan Noon and Ken Hoar. the Rev. Derrick preached his sermon on how the Holy Spirit works within us during each ..-day of our lives. Personals Mrs. Lois Herbert and Helen attended the 53rd weekend of the Diocese of Huron, which was held at Huron College London from June 1 to 3. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hall of Strathroy, Helen and Betty Ann Herbert of London, also Gary Waugh of Komoka, were dinner guests on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins and John. Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Morley fo West McGillivray were din- ner guests on Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Harlton and also called at the Hodgins home. There was a long business session, a number of items were discussed and taken care of. There was also a "bakeless bake sale". Mrs. Gerald Dann and Mrs. Rhea Hardie were in charge of the program, and since so much time was taken up with business, the program was shortened. Mrs. Dann presented a paper on worship, saying "worship should not be an escapist exercise". A discussion followed and a short poem "Your Name" concluded the program. Lunch was served by the hostess. Charlotte Kerr who was in hospital was remembered with a gift and a get well card. A social time followed. Mrs. Garnet Baker was the hostess for Unit 5 on June 7. Mrs. Chas. Roll call was answered by members nam- ing their favourite June flower. Seven members and three visitors were present.
