Times-Advocate, 1984-04-25, Page 17Dessert euchre at Varna By Mary Chessell Varna United Church Women had a busy week. On Wednesday they had 16 tables at the dessert euchre and bake sale. The younger women do much of the work for this project. Prize winners at euchre were high, Jean McEwen; low, Greta Scot- chmer; lone hands, Annie Finkbeiner. The many door prizes were won by Gladys Hoggarth, Anna Keys, Esther Moffatt, Mabel McAdam, Nora Heard, Edith Wright, Eileen Consitt, Evelyn McBeath, Joyce McBeath, Madeline Rathwell, Irene Whitmore, Alice Lawson, Ed- na Cox, Ann Broadfoot, Margaret Dowson, Gertie Fleischauer, Josephine McGregor and Eleanor Hendrick. On Wednesday evening a carload of ladies attended the Bayfield U.C.W. thank - offering meeting and on Thursday evening a couple of carloads went to Goshen to their Maundy Thursday ser- vice: Mrs. Jean Bennett spoke on her immersion experience in church work in The Third World. The Varna Singers contributed special music. Music by the choir and Pete Postill's solo The Holy City added to the warship in Var- na church on Sunday. The Rev. Brown's sermon was "New Life for Old" and the children's story "The Cater- pillar and the Butterfly." Next week, Thursday May 3 Henry Baker will speak on the care of plants and shrubs at Varna's U.C.W meeting. Meeting time is 8:30. Too bad the weather couldn't have been more co-operative. Movies were shown on Mon- day evening followed by refreshments. Bingo was moved to Wednesday evening instead of Friday because of the holi- day. The feature pt'ize was a large chocolate bunny which was won by Mrs. Mae Bulak. Florence Elliott is spending two weeks with her son Bruce and his family in Aurora. Rev. Donna Kyllonen con- ducted Easter Communion Service for the members of St. Peter's Lutheran church on Good Friday. Fr. Mooney of St. Boniface R.C. Church said Mass on Good Friday afternoon. We regret that Mrs. Alver- nia Hill is a patient in South Huron Hospital, Exeter. The residents enjoyed the Easter music of the adult class of the Zurich Mennonite church on Sunday morning. The Sunday evening service was conducted by Rev. Clayton Kuepfer of the Zurich Mennonite Church. A family celebration was held at the home of Joe and, Hose Regier last Saturday April 14 in honour of their daughter Audrey, who recent- ly graduated from Westervelt in Banking Careers. This past Easter Sunday friends and relatives dropped in to con- gratulate their son Pat who also graduated in accounting from Lambton College in Sarnia.
