Memorial Cup Close
Area hockey fans will have the chance to watch the
best junior hockey teams in Canada in action m the very
near future.
The Memorial Cup will be decided in a four team
playoff at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium from
May 12 to 19.
One of the four teams will be the Kitchener Rangers
who have completed a record setting regular Ontario
Hockey league season and are on the way to the league
championship.
The Rangers clinched the host team berth on the final
weekend of the schedule with 25 straight victories, an
OHL record.
If Kitchener wins their league championship, the OHL
will have a second in the Memorial Cup final series. _
The crowds for the Memorial Cup will be large as the
Kitchener Rangers have the best support of any junior
hockey team in Canada with an average attendance of
4,400.
A playoff package is available for $55 for one ticket
to each of the seven games and the eighth if it is
necessary.
Of course local interest in the Rangers comes from
Exeter native Dave Shaw who is in his third season with
the club. He was named to the league's first all star
team and was second to Brad Shaw of Ottawa in voting
for the best defenceman.
The Rangers had an incredible home record winning
17 in a row at the auditorium for a season mark of 31 -
victories, one tie and only three losses. Their overall
season record was 52-16-2.
Centre John Tucker who spent a lot of the past season
with the Buffalo Sabres scored 40 goals and added 60
assists for an even 100 points in only 39 games. They
only lost twice with Tucker in the lineup.
Young at heart
The basic fundamentals of baseball don't change over
the years and Johnny Neun, a Milwaukee instructor is
a good example of this fact.
Neun, now 83 years of age and one of eight men in ma-
jor league history to make an unassisted triple play was
gi-ving tips on baserunning and fielding first base at the
Brewers minor league training camp this spring.
Second or third guessing
Toronto Blue Jays fans and this one in particular are
beginning to do a little second guessing -as far as
manager Bobby Cox is concerned in the early going of
the current American league baseball season.
We know that Cox can't go out to the mound and throw
the ball across the plate for strike's without having it
go over the fence for a home run, but, some of his moves
have been questionable.
In a couple of early games he took out starting pit-
chers who had thrown very successfully for six or seven
innings and came in with relievers who were not as
fortunate.
Cox has certainly been going with the percentages of
throwing a left handed pitcher against a left handed hit-
ter and the same for right handers and it hasn't been
working as well as a year ago.
Sunday was a prime example. After southpaw Jim-
my Key had fanned Reggie Jackson, Cox went to the
bullpen for his ace Dennis Lamp to face Brian Ddwn-
ing. You guessed it. Downing put the ball out of the park
to put the game out of reach for the Blue Jays.
The Battle of Quebec
When the playoff series between the Montreal Cana -
diens and the Quebec Nordiques got underway it was
labelled the battle of Quebec and it turned out to be ex-
actly that, hut, not with the puck, but with fists and some
strong tempers.
It's a long time since we can remember such an en-
counter as the two Quebec teams had Friday night at
the end of the second period and the beginning of the
third before the 'labs finally won.
I lindsight is again a very valuable asset. We know this
type of incident doesn't happen very often, but, there
should be some measures in the rule book to guard
against mayhem of this sort. .
I low about a rules allowing only the six players from
each team that will start a period on the ice before play
gets underway.
Referee Bruce 'food apparently thought the teams
had been told which players hag received match
penalties and were already out of the game, but this
didn't happenand the scraps were underway as the bad
boys in the first incident were sought out by the
opposition.
While in a critical mood we may as well talk about
the NEIL playoff format and suggest going back to the
system used by former president Clarence Campbell.
Under Campbell's scheme, the team ending up in first
place overall would meet the worst, number two would
take on the second worst and so on down the ladder. The
same manner of pairing off opponents prevailed in each
succeeding round with the higher finisher always get-
ting the extra home game.
The result was that every point a team picked up all
year would be important and worth working for. Nobody
could afford to go through the regular schedule with Tess
than 100 percent efforts.
