Mary's
musings
By Mary Alderson
We've had an overdose of
award nights on television
lately. Music awards, televi-
sion awards, movie awards -
with all those people winning
little statues you'd think we
would have the best entertain-
ment possible on television.
But I don't think that's the
case - frankly, I've been bored
with all the award shows.
The people presenting and
receiving these awards are
supposed'to be the best enter-
tainers available today. They
should feel comfortable on
stage - they should be right at
home and in their element.
• Then why do so many look
nervous and strained while
they are in the spotlight?
Why can't the world's best
actors and actresses 'ad lib'
while they are presenting and
receiving these awards? Why
do they recite such obviously
rehearsed phony dialogue?
Why do they have to read
their lines from cue -cards?
These of all people should be
able to go on stage and say
what they are supposed to say
without being prompted or be-
ing told what to say.
In between the phony
dialogue we have to listen to
the winners thanking people
over and over again - usually
people we've never heard of.

their time thanking (heir

nice to thank one's family and
give some credit to those who
have helped - but 1 just
Wonder how many of those
people who are thanking their
families on stage remember
to' show that appreciation
when they get home?
The entertainment on the
award showsseems to be
decreasing as well. Sure. we
hear a few songs or maybe a
few jokes are told.
Remember the night Michael
Jackson won all the
grammies'.'
We heard him thank his
parents_ over and over ad
naseum, but did we hear him
sing two words? We did see
him dance on stage for about
half a second, but other than
that we only saw his talent on
a few clips of a video.
There aren'' any unusual
episodes to liven up the award
programs any more either. A
few years ago, some of the
stars would use the oscar
night to make a political
stand, refusing to acept an
• award because of the plight of
some interest group. That
would break the monotony of
the program.
Or better yet. a streaker
would run across the stage to
cause a commotion.
Sometimes, someone would
appear in .a terribly outlan-
dish costume, which would
give the viewers something to
talk about the next day, -But
lately, all they do is pas, -out
a few trophies. How boring.
Do you know -what really
upsets me? You sit ,J.ttere
through all the boring stuff -
the stammering speakers
who can't -read cue cards. the
repetitive thank yous. the
reading of the rules, the in-
troduction of the accountants
to tabulate the votes, the
awarding of the lesser prizes
- just fo find out who the big
winners actually are.
You suffer through the win-
ners of documentaries,
foreign language .films,
animated- shorts and other
such topics. waiting to find
out what the movie of the year
is going to be. And by the time
they announce the big winner,
you've fallen asleep in your
recliner chair.
FIREMEN PRESENT POSTER AWARDS — The Exeter fire department recently conducted a poster contest for

To discuss zoning of beach
At the Monday night
meeting of Grand Bend Coun-
cil, it was decided to invite.
beach -front property owner
Tim Fraleigh to attend Tues-
day's meeting of the planning
advisory committee to
discuss negotiations for the
zoning of the beach property
north of King Street.
Fraleigh had requested a
continuance of temporary re-
zoning of part of the norther-
ly portion of his property so
that he could continue to
operate the parking lot which
was installed last year. Ile
asked for a three year exten-
sion in commercial zonir, .
After proper notification to
area property owners, there
were both written objections
and verbal objections at last
week's public meeting.
Objections were based on
the fact that Fraleigli had not
honored his site -plan agree-
ment. Residents asked for a
walkway through the parking
lot to the beach, a buffer zone
between the lot and private
property, and, they objected
to temporary structures on
the beach.
Negotiations hinge on a pro-
mise from R. Paul Fraleigh,
that the village will eventual-.
ly own about 166 feet of beach
from the water's edge, which
is now held by the Fraleigh •
Company. Fraleigh indicated
at the public meeting, last
week, if the zoning extension
to the north was not forthcom-
ing, he would expand the
parking lot further tow'r-d the
lake in the southerly portion
of the property which has
been zoned commercial.

Catholic news
• On Palm Sunday today's
gospel of (}hrist's passion
and death illustrates how dif-
ferent individuals are touch-
ed by these events and
reacted in fear. Judas was
afraid. that Christ was not the
Messiah; and after . he
betrayed Jesus he was afraid
. God would never forgive him;.
so he hanged himself in
despair.
The Apostles were afraid of
losing Christ as their leader,
of losing their own lives as his
follower. Pilate and the chief
priests acted in various ways
fearful of losing their power,
position or influence in the
community. True belief in
Christ offers us freedom from
such early fears.
Holy Week - This is the
week of deliberations when
Lent comes toa fitting conclu-
sion, . but the,
celebration of
Holy Thursday, Good Friday
and the Easter vigil. It is a
time for the Christian com-
munity to gather together for
prayer and reflection upon
the mystery of God's love for
mankind. Holy Thursday
mass will begin at 7:15 p.m.
There will be first commu-
nion celebrations and
everyone will have a chance
to receive communion from
both the host and chalice.
Good Friday at 3:00 p.m.
you are invited to participate
in this solemn lithegy to
reflect upon the passion and
death of Jesus Christ. The
church will remain open from
8:00 a. m. to 8:00 p.m. and peo-
ple are invited to drop in and -
make the Stations of the
Cross. -Catholics are also
reminded that the church
recommends very highly to
fast and abstain on this day.
On holy Saturday the
Easter vigil begins at 7:15.
This is the most important of
all our church lithego celebra-
tions. All families should try
to attend. During this season
of Lent, all of us have been in-
vited to identify with the
needs of the poor, by giving
up some.of our own pleasures
and some sacrifices, sharing
our savings with the Cana
dian Movement of Develop-
ment and Peace. The collec-
tion at Holy Thursday will be
for this cause.
Notice on the evening of
Easter Sunday, April 22, CBS
