Lions could continue
aid for ree faciities
The plan louse profits from
the upcoming Homecoming
and Peanut Stomp weekend
for lights at the tennis courts
could be the first of a line of
recreational projects under-
taken by the Exeter Lions and
Lioness.
That was the good news
passed on to the South Huron
rec centre board of manage-
ment at their Thursday
meeting by. Lions represen-
tative Doug Ellison, chair-
man of the fund-raising pro-
ject scheduled for the second
weekend in June.
Ellison said . that Lions
decided to undertake_ the
lighting project for two basic
reasons; the first being that
the club needed a project to
keep their members active.
"We're most successful and
active when in debt," he
explained.
Ile added that the club,
which built the courts origina-
1y, felt that the lighting pro-
ject would. complete the job
and make the facility more
functional.
Ellison admitted that the
lights may not be considered
as the most tna jot need by the
rec board.
He said if the Homecoming
and Peanut Stomp weekend
generates the type of interest
and profit hoped fov by the
organizers. they would con-
sider future projects in the
area of recreation.
Ile suggested the board
consider putting their short
and long-term plans in
writing for the Lions to con-
sider in future fund-raising
efforts.

the Lions are doing.- board

week to organize a local -ten-
nis club again. She said not
many attended, but she
understood that several
others were interested.
"People are very nervous
about joining the club," Jim
Workman advised, sug-
gesting this was due to pro-
blems experienced .in the
past. .
Farquhar s".id she hoped
that once the club got going.
Some of the former members
would get confidence in it and
come back to start playing.
Chairman details
overtime reasons
Police committee chairman
Bill Rase explained to Exeter
council this week why the
overtime hours being record-
ed by the police department
personnel have been running
at a higher level than usual.
He indicated one of the
reasons for the 63 hours
recorded in the past month
was due to the illness of Chief
Ted Day and the inordinate
number of hours taken up by
some investigations.
Information supplied to
council showed that one break
and enter investigation had
resulted in 94 hours and three
sudden deaths in the com-
munity last month required
the officers to spend 79 hours
on details pertaining to those
incidents.
Rose concluded by saying
he hoped that overtime would
be reduced in the immediate
future. The' police have
recorded 218 hours of over-
time in the first three months
of this year, while the works
department had 135 hours.
The monthly police report
indicated a continuing pro-
blem with shoplifting and
thefts under $200. There were
10 such incidents with loot
amounting to $730, of which.
$17 has been recovered. There
were three thefts of over $200
each with the loot being $950,
none of which has been
recovered, and there were
three break and enters with
the theft total being $132 and -

ball team. T -A photo
damage arising from the
breakins being $200.
During March there were
12 motor vehicle collisions
with damage of $9,120 and one
injury. One parking ticket
was issued and nine charges
laid under each of the
Highway Traffic Act and the
Liquor Control Act.
Animal complaints also in-
creased substantially to eight.
OKAY PROJECT
Exeter's planning advisory
committee were advised of
the new machine shop being
planned by Laverne Hamilton
at their regular meeting on
April 11 and suggested to
council this week that no site
plan agreement is required
for the proposal.
Hamilton plans to erect the
new shop on Highway 83, west
of the CNR tracks, and has
been advised by federal of-
ficials that $66,090 in
Unemployment Insurance
funds will be available to
assist in hiring the labour for
the project.
