Varna events
By Mary Chessell
John Dowson, Scott Consitt,
Dale Stephenson and Mark
Taylor returned Thursday
night from an enjoyable vaca-
tion in the Barbados. They
toured the island and had a
cruise on the Jolly Roger.
The women of Varna U.C.W
enjoyed hearing Joyce
Dowson's account of her holi-
day in Jamaica at the April
meeting on Thursday night.
She found some comparisons
with Acapulco, where %4hey
were a year ago, and major
differences. In Acapulco, beg-
ging apparently was Ian oc-
cupation for many women. In
Jamaica, the people had
great quantities of goods to
sell, and were aggressive in
their efforts to make sales.
Hand -carved canes,
beautifully embroidered
baskets of woven grass,
strings of beads made of cof-
fee beans, seeds, etc. and
clothing and dress materials
were offered in great abun-
dance. Women made sun-
dresses for them while 'they
were on the coach trip into the
mountains.
The major industry is
tourism, followed by sugar
and bananas. Due to the poor
economy, some schools have
been closed. Lack of sanita-
tion was noticeable. In spite of
the poverty, the residents ap-
peared to be happy and
content.
in Jamaican money, $3.15
was equal to one American
dollar and bought about the
same. The exchange rate is
similar in Mexico, but buys
three times as much in Mex-
ican goods. Jamaican curren-
cy is worthless outside of the
country. Spanish, African and
English is mixed together in
the local dialects. A few Great
Houses, the home of planta-
tion slaves, are still there.
One has been the setting for
several novels . Il-
legal marijuana cultivation
and use is a major problem
for the government.
An exciting experience for
Joyce was the climb up
600 -foot Dunn's Falls.
Ruby Hill and Dorothy
Ostrom were program con-
veners and hostesses. The
worship theme was on the
seasons and Easter. The
treasurer's report showed our
financial situation much im-
proved from the pancake sup-
per, the dinner for the dairy
farmers, sponsored by Roth
Mills and Shur -Gain and the
two quilts done for Barbara
Consitt.
Invitations were accepted
from Bayfield and Goshen
U.C.W.s. Rev. Barbara Laing

thank -offering meeting on

Thursday April I9. Varna's

A bale of clothing will be
packed the latter part of May

the things you no longer need
when you're doing your
spring housecleaning.

her accordion and Ann Hart-
man played a piano solo. The

refreshments.

ward Stire back from

is presently a patient in South
Huron Hospital.

noon. Friday evening bingo
