South Huron again won the
Huron -Perth gynmastics
Championship held in Exeter
Thursday. The team's win
came as a surprise to no one,
however the certainty of it
took nothing away from the
superior skill of the
gymnasts.
South Huron coach Carey
Eddy, while admitting she
knew they would win at the
beginning of the season simp-
ly because her team has so
many nore gymnasts, said
she was very pleased with the
girls' performances. "They
had excellent scores and we
won most of the individual
championships". Overall
division champions were Ron-
nalyn Bell, Lee O'Rourke,
Catherine Patterson and
Starr Jesney.
The girls compete at
WOSSA this Saturday in St.
Thomas Parkside. Eddy feels
there is a good chance her
team will retain their WOSSA
championship for the third
year, Every Exeter gymnast
qualified for WOSSA by plac-
ing in the top six in one event.
South Huron should also
have a few competitors at
OFSSA if the girls perform up
to their ability. Junior and in-
termediate gymnasts qualify
by placing fust or second. Lee
O'Rourke's chances are ex-
cellent in Intermediate but
Starr Jesney and Jacqui Cot -
trell are in
the toughest divi-
sien as only the winner in
each category will go to
OFSSA for the fourth time
Catherine Patterson should
compete atFSAA Gyn-
mastics. The top three all
round Senior A finishers
qualify. OFSAA will be held in
Hamilton on fourth and
fifth
Despite the lack of com-
petitors at Huron -Perth the
calibre of gynuraatics has in -
proved as the scores indicate.
South Huron juniors swept
the over all slate. Mary
Martens was second to Ron-
nalyn Bell's championship.
Carole Morrissey placed third
over-all. The placings were
distributed among South
Huron's juniors;
Barb Lawson's peppy floor
routine earned first. Ron-
nalyn Bell was second,
Leanne Jennison third, Mary
Martens fourth and Carole
Mo{ issey sixth on the floor.
South Huron had a clean
sweep on both bars and vault.
In winning order for bars
were Carole Morrissey, Mary
Martens, Ronnalyn Bell,
Barb Lawson, Leanne Jen-
nison and Kin Boogemans. On
the vault the order switched
to Kim Boogemans, Ronnalyn
Bell, Carole Morrissey, Mary
Martens and Barb Lawson.
The pressure of competing
for the first time was handl-
ed quite well by the junlors,
On the beam Mary Martens
was first and Ronnalyn Bell
second. Leanne Jennison and
Carole Morrissey placed
fourth and fifth respectively.
In the Itermediate division,
Lee O'Rourke had the judges
marvelling over her excellent
routines as she won on every
event. The petite gymnast
earned marks of 9.0 on both
bars and floor.
Lee's floor routine was very
entertaining. For second on
floor Jodi McBride executed
a fine routine. Rose Morrissey
placed third and Susan Boyle
sixth. In vaulting Lee's win
was followed by a fifth for
Kelly Johns. Kelly's bars
were a disappointment as she
was the first competitor of the
day. She droppped into sixth
place. On bars Lee was first
and Rose Morrissey second.
South Huron went 1,2,3 on the
intermediate beam with Lee,
Rose and Jodi McBride
respectively qualifying.
Senior B is South Huron's
weakest division but the girls
performed their routines well
to make up for their lack of
numbers.Having sprained
her ankle two days before
competition, Montaha Osma
merely touched the floor d
beam yet stilt qualifies for
WOSSA because of the few
competitors.
Lisa Rundle placed first on

beam.the With an unusually
disappointing routine Susan
Birmingham
a ngham was fourth and
Darlene McBride fifth. Sue
Birmingham performed well
to place second on bars and a
third on vault. Lisa Rundle's
well choreographed floor
routine earned her second.
Catherine Patterson's win
last year of the all -Ontario
beam forced her into the
Senior A level which is
reserved for club athletics
and OFSAA winners. She
handled the transition well
and should end her excellent
five-year career in high
school gymnastics with
• another flourish at OFSAA.
Catherine's 9.3 win on the
beam was the highest mark
given that day. Her supreme
concentration was also ap-
parent for her win on the
bars, but in what coach Eddy
described as a "fluke"
Catherine messed up a tumbl-
ing line to drop to second on
the floor. On her weakest ap-
paratus, the vault, Catherine
was second.
Starr Jesney's unbitter
comment on winning the Elite
overall was "Well its about.
time". Starr has been perfor-
ming strong gymnastics
under the shadow of another
star Catherine 'Pits' Patter-
son but Pits move up into the
'A' level left Starr free to
shine.
Jacqui Cottrell also con-
peted with vigour. Her floor
routine won with a mark of 9.0
Jacqui's dance a sl high
tumbling was excellent. Starr
Jesney's strong rumbling
earned second. Starting off
superbly Sandra McCurdy
faltered at the end of her floor
routine but was still third.
On the beam Starr was se-
cond and Jacqui third. Sandra ,
McCurdy executed a great
bars routine to win while
Starr was second. Vaulting
earned Starr another second.
Jacqui and Sandra were third
and fourth respectively.
South Huron students and
any other fans will be able to
appreciate the results of long,
hard practice, tomorrow, as
the gymnasts will perform
their routines for the school.
The performance will start at
2:15p.m., Thursday in the
high school's old gym. Admis-
sion is 81.00.
