Biers ended their 1883-84
hockey season on a great note
by winning the B champion-
ship of the Parkhill atom
tournament.
The Crunchers after losing
their first game to the Lucan
Blazers entered the alit com-
petition and responded with a
2-0 victory over the Parkhill
Jets.
The first goal for the Crun-
chers came in a very even
first period with Mike Clay
firing the successful shot on a
pasa from Rob Haines.
Joel Smith was the
marksman for the second and
final Cruncher goal. Richard
Phillips played a strong game
in the Exeter goal to record
his first tournament shutout.
The B championship final
put the Crunchers against
their hometown rivals, the
Exeter atom Bells. The Bell
team coached by Jim Miron
has been a good scoring team
all year. The two local clubs
have met a number of times
this season in league and ex-
hibition games and each has
won a fair share of games.
Half way through the first
period Joel Smith was able to
manoeuvre the puck through
the opposing players and with
some fancy foot work made
his way into the Bell zone to
score the first goal.
Shortly after the Bells came
back with their first goal by
Ryan Lindenfield assisted by
Tony Armstrong and Fred
Steciuk to tie the score at 1-1.
In the same period the puck
went into the Bell end and
passes from Mark McDonald
and Robbie Passmore set up
Mike Clay who was in front of
the net to make the score 2-1.
At 7:36 of the third period in
the Bell end a quick pass by
Jeff Rate was picked up by
Kevin Johns and with a short
swing it was in. This was
Kevin's first goal of the
season.
The Bells came back two
minutes later with a goal by
Ryan Lindenfield assisted by
Jeremy Brock and Danny
Vanderlaan.
With a minute left, Ryan
Lindenfield fired a hard Bell
shot only to have Richard
Phillips make a magnificent
save.
This tournament really
showed the steady progress of
the Crunchers who started the
year with five new players
and with time, effort, deter-
mination by all and the
guidance of coach George
Godbolt assisted by Bob Clay
and Bob McDonald were able
to end their season on a high
note.
