Good start this year
for local Massey dealer
The first two months have
been encouraging for the
farm machinery dealer in this
area according to Gabby Mol,
owner of Sherwood Exeter
Limited, the Massey -
Ferguson franchise in Exeter.
Mol said this week, "1983
was a rather dissappointing
sales year, but, this year
should be a lot better if the
first two months are any in-
dication. In January and
February we have done more
business than we did in the
last six months of 1983. Last
year things were very low."
He continued, "It's going to
be a better year this year. I
don't see it being really great,
but, at least better. Farmers
seem to be a little more op-
timistic. They made a few
dollars last year."
The big factor in remaining
successful according to Mol is
"controlling operating costs
and keeping our overhead
down. Our profit margin is
not g000d."
Massey -Ferguson has
unveiled a new 3000 series
tractor ranging in horsepower
from 90 to 130, Mol adds, "It's
as good a line as there is on
the market right now. It's the
first on the market with elec-
tronic three point hitch con-
trol, a carryover from our
4000 serie . of four wheel
drives.
Massey -Ferguson tractors
are available in 34 to 175
horsepower models and range
in prices from $14,000 to
$130,000. The company can
provide anything farmers
demand.
In used machinery, Mol
says "small tractors and
other implements sell the
best. Used equipment is real-
ly not a local thing. A lot
comes in from the United
States and you have to be
aware of wheelers and
dealers."
The local Massey Ferguson
dealership has an excellent
parts and service depart-
ment. Mol added, "Our parts
availability is good. Anything
we don't have in stock can be
ordered by 2 p.m. one after-
noon and we will have it by 8
a.m. the next morning. Our
mechanics take two weeks of
in-service training each year
at Massey Ferguson in Brant-
ford or Toronto."
Massey Ferguson
3525
Ferguson manufactured
the first tractor with an
automatic three-point hitch in
1948. According to Mol quite
a number of these machines
still exist as hobby tractors.
Mol started working for the
late Harry Sherwood in 1964
and assumed ownership in
1973 on the death of Sherwood.
In addition to the Massey -
Ferguson franchise Mol also
carries lawn and garden
machinery lines of Snapper,
Roper and Homelite-
Jacobsen and is the only ful-
ly listed Exeter dealer for the
Briggs -Stratton line.
Mol is his own chief
salesman and also helps in
the service department.
The local Massey -Ferguson
staff includes in addition to
owner Gabby Mol, parts
manager Paul McKnight,
mechanics Dave Holmes and
Brent Blackler, part-time
employees Gary Urquhart,
office staff Pam Wulterkens
and son John Mol, a grade 13
student at South Huron
District High School who
assists on weekends and dur-
ing summer holidays.
