Times-Advocate, 1984-03-07, Page 7blems faced by a city like Toronto would not be identical to the situation in a more rural community like Exeter.) McMurtry said courts play a punitive role, citizens a preventative one. He said more public awareness was needed to "look not just at our neighbour but ourself as a potential source of tragedy." The eight -member commit- tee formed in response to the letter consists of Dr. Don Ecker and his wife Melva, Verna Gingerich, Ted Johnson, Shelley Little, Lauretta Siegner, Peter Snell and Dr. Ralph Topp. Mayor Bruce Shaw will serve as ex officio member. The Eckers were responsi- ble for bringing Helen Poole, London co-ordinate of PRIDE (People to Reduce Impair Driving Everywhere) t x- eter Monday evening, as they have been charter members of the London chapter since its formation last September. After Mrs. Poole met with the ad hoc committee in one of the rooms at the United Church on James Street, some of the members stayed to hear her spealf on the same subject to the regular meeting of the evening unit of the U.C.W. • For an hour, Mrs. Poole held the rapt attention of her audience as she eloquently and persuasively presented the need for some action to reduce the havoc and heart- break caused by those who drink and drive. She said that when she was growing up children died of TB, mastoid infection, measles, polio and other diseases that have since been eradicated through vaccina- tion and inoculation. Now thousands are maimed and killed on• our highways. She termed this "stupid, wicked, and wrong." According to Mrs. Poole, the only way to tackle the pro- blem of the drinking driver is by changing public attitudes. She said many don't think of getting into the driver's seat after consuming -two or three drinks as "criminal" activity. She quoted a Toronto official who dubbed it "socially ac- ceptable homicide." Mrs. Poole said young peo- ple under 25 area particular- ly vulnerable group, as they are inexperienced at both driving and drinking. They ere surrounded by commer- cials and advertisements depicting a fantasy world of young, good-looking, healthy people drinking in elegant surroundings. The dark side, the damage an alcoholic does to his family, or someone vomiting on a policeman dur- ing a breathalyser test, is never shown. These young adults face a complex, difficult world where they have to cope with a shortage of jobs, and com- plicated moral issues unknown to the previous generation. She said we must not be judgmental, but en- courage this age group to make resonsible decisions. The London-based PRIDE ispressinnfor changes which include increased police spot checks, a portable breath tester installed in every police car in the province, raising the drinking age again to 21, a warning label on every bot- tle of alcoholic beverage. lowering of the permissible blood alcohol level from .08 milligrams to .05, mandatory blood samples from drivers who are unable, or pretend to be unable to supply a breath sample, impounding of vehicles of convicted im- paired drivers, banning lifestyle advertising of alcohol, charges under the criminal code rather than the highway traffic act for per- sons apprehended driving with suspended licences, and raising the present man- CONC' ER D CITIZENS — An ad hoc committee has been appointed by Exeter coun- cil to research the drinking -driving problem in this area. In Ontario, two victims die each day in alcohol-related accidents which occur an average of one every 17 minutes in this province. One of every eight cars on the road on any given weekend has an impaired driver at the wheel. These frightening statistics, first compiled by a task force appointed by Premier Bill Davis, were delivered with stunning impact Monday evening to an ad hoc commit- tee appointed by Exeter coun- cil after receipt of a letter from attorney -general Roy McMurtry. The letter, sent to every municipality in Ontario, urg- ed each community to establish a committee to make the public in that par- ticular community familiar with the local drinking - driving problem.
