If that oil furnace is still in good shape, you can also take advantage of converting to a dual energy heating system. Instead of replacing your furnace, introduce it to a heat pump, electric plenum heater or base- board heaters. These dual energy systems let oil and electricity work in harmony to heat your home more efficiently and more economically. Your home already has at least one heat pump ... the refrigerator. Hold your hand near the coils at the back of your fridge and you'll feel the heat that's being extracted and moved into the mom. The heat pump used in dual energy systems works exactly the same way. Even on the coldest winter days, there is still warmth in the outside air. Until the temperature drops to around the freezing point, the heat pump moves the warmth into the house. Below that temperature, your oil furnace takes over. Through an entire winter, energy costs will usually be reduced by 20-30%. The added bonus of a heat pump is its ability to reverse its direction. In the summer, the system removes heat from the inside air and becomes a central air conditioner. Install a heat pump and you may be eligible for a COSP (Canada Oil Substitution Program) grant. It pays for half of the installed cost or $800, which- ever is less, if you reduce your oil consumption by 50% or more. Telephone today and ask for a visit from our energy adviser. We'll tell you about the ad- vantages of dual energy heating systems and special assistance that could lead to even greater savings.
