The January meeting of the
United Church Women was
held on Monday evening with
90 in attendance. The Leader-
ship and Development and
Christian Development com-
mittees were in charge of the
program. Mrs. Murray
Dawson welcomed and wish-
ed everyone A Happy New
Year.
Mrs.. Dawson read a poem
"Old Year Out". Mrs.
Howard Cunnington read the
Scripture Psalm 3. Mrs.
Fleming Simpson read the
meditation "Happy New
Year". Mrs. Jack Duncan led
in prayer. Mrs. Simpson and
Mrs. Cunriington received the
offering with prayer by Mrs.
Dawson. They sang "Face of
a Poor God" which was in the
Study Packet.
Mrs. Dawson, Mrs. Jack
Duncan and Rev. Robert
Matheson introduced the
Study Book "Jesus Means
Life".
A skit "Laundry. Room"
with Mrs. Duncan as Iva,
Mrs. Simpson as Iona and
Mrs. Cunniigton' as I'm
Meek. Rev. Matheson led in
discussion groups about the
skit.

Mrs. Lee Webber the new
president opened the business
part of the meeting with a
poem "A Big Adventure -Lies
Ahead". The usual business
was dealt with.
The roll call was answered
with How I can make this
year mean more to me. The
meal prices were set and the
date for the Strawberry and
Ham Supper was set for June
18. Mrs. Webber closed with
prayer. A delicious lunch was
served by Group W and the
hostess Mrs. Don Richardson.

Church Service
Rev. Robert Matheson was
in charge of the New Year's
Day church service. They
sang a number of Christmas
carols with the pianist Miss
Agnes Bray at the piano. The
Children's Story was entitled
Christmas and New Year's -
More Than Just Turkey?
The Scripture Lesson was
read from Ecclesiastes 3:1-9,
14-17, Colossians 3:12-21, Mat-
thew 2:13-15, 19-23. The ser-
mon was entitled "Some
Roots We Seldom See."
Sunday School will be held
Sunday, January 8 at 10 a.m.
with the church service at
11:15 a.m. It will be this way
until March 25.
The Youth Group will meet
Sunday evening January 8 at
7:30 p.m. in Thames Road
Church.

dent Ruth Eveland welcomed
everyone and thanked the
ladies for cards, treats, etc.

The Curious Cat was read
by Dianne Finkbeiner and the
singing of Silent Night closed
the evening. Anne Cottel
thanked the lunch and pro-
gram committees.
The Crediton and District
Social Club held their New
Years Eve dance at the town
hall Saturday evening. The
music was provided by
Beachwood. A sellout crowd
danced their way till midnight
then a shower of balloons and
curling paper encircled the
dancers. Horns tooted,
clangers clanged and clap-
pers clapped as everyone
sangAuldLangSyne and gave
wishes for a Happy New
Year.
Winners of the door prizes
Were Larry Howald, Jim
Eagleson and Stu,McClean.
Spot dance winners were Jeff
Romphf, Teri Dobson and

Rev. Bruce Pierce conducted
the New Years Day service
and took his sermon fron3 the
Scripture lesson 1 Peter 2:9-12
and entitled his message
"Cabbage Patch or Perfect
Match." Mrs. E. Bryan
favoured with a vocal solo at
the conclusion of the offering.
On New Year's Eve, a fami'
ly night was held in the
church basement: Games and
cards were enjoyed, then a
brief worship service observ-
ed followed by a pot blessing
lunch at 12:30.
At St. Thomas Anglican
church on New Years Day,
Rev. Peter Derrick was the
celebrant of the holy
eucharist assisted by John
Herbert. The ceremony of the
lighting of the Christ candle in
the advent wreath was per-
formed by .Sylvia Beatson:
The first and second lessons
and the Gospel were read by
the rector and Helen Herbert.
The Rev. Derrick preached
his sermon on the naming of
Jesus, who is God's anointed
One,Jesus means "God saves
and God delivers."
Flowers in the church were
in loving memory of Robert
A. Carson by his wife, Etta.
