Times-Advocate, 1983-11-09, Page 35r Alice Claypole, first administrator Alice Claypole, joined the South Huron Hospital staff about a month before it opened to assist the board in the purchasing of medical and surgical supplies. She was hired as director of nurs- ing but later the title was changed to administrator, in which capacity she served until her retirement in December, 1974. Fellow workers remember Miss Claypole as an administrator who ran a 'tight ship'. Desiring to keep the hospital in the black, she was always frugal. "There was no waste under First staff Continued from page 16 John Ferguson, Mrs. William Hooper and Mrs. Allie Heink. Ward aids were Marion Tinney and Shirley Dixon, and assisting in kitchen duties and housekeeping were Mrs. George Tinney, Mildred Pherelle, Betty Bailey and Mrs. Myr- tle Hunter. Charlie Allison was in charge of maintenance. Alice", says one of her co-workers." An explanation was required for every new pencil, and she had us cutting up paper for scratch pads." Miss Claypole was a woman who had the courage of her convictions. She demanded and got the co- operation of staff and board, alike. It is said that few ever questioned her authority. She was consumed with the desire for excellence in the care of the sick; and the disciplines she set for those who worked for her were the same she adhered to herself. She was kind and generous and a friend to many. Miss Claypole saw the hospital through its infancy and the tenuous growing years, some of which were not without difficulties. July 24, 1969, was a day she never forgot, the day the hospital was innundated with water when a flash flood poured through Exeter. All her precious records of the hospital's growth were. swept away along with furniture and supplies. Recalling the incident, later, she said, "We lost everything...it was Alice Claypole - first adminstrator like starting all over again." Miss Claypole died in 1982, hav- ing given over half a century to the health care profession. The modern, maternity ward, planned for convenience and comfort was built in the north end. Ten infanette units, some of the first to be used in Canada, were equipped with everything necessary for the life and well being of the babies during their stay in the hospital. Everyone was full of anticipation as they waited for the first baby to honour the hospital by being born there. The wait was short. Jimmy Shar- row, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sharrow, Grand Bend, put in his ap- pearance about eight hours after the hospital opened to patients on February 3, 1953. Jack Darling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Darling just missed the honour by being born exactly one hour after Jimmy. The two boys set the tone for fur- ther races and the event has been dominated by members of the male set since. A special event was held to mark the arrival of the 1,000th baby at the hospital. It was won by Cornelius Verkerk Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Verkerk, RR 1 Exeter. The lad won the race in competition with his twin brother. • FEST BABY BORN in the new hospital was Jimmy Sharrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sharrow, Grand Bend. He made his appearance just eight hours after the hospital opened.
