In December -rs the hospital was
nearing completion, the association
made one final appeal for funds to
'furnish the hospital' fcr $20,000.
Opening day
When the hospital opened its
doors, officially, January 29 and 30
1953, there was fanfare and celebra-
tion. Dignitaries attending included
Hon. MacKinnon Phillips, Ontario
Minister of Health, Thomas Pryde,
MPP, and A.Y. McLean, MP. All
community leaders were on hand, as
well.
Around 5,000 people streamed in
to view and take quiet pride in 'their'
hospital, the first ever to be built in
the southern end of Huron County.
South Huron Hospital was a
building volunteers built. Everything
that went into it, except the basic
design and actual construction was
done by co-operative citizens in their
spare time.
For the people who had worked so
hard for five years, seeing the
hospital actually standing there with
its shiny, up-to-date equipment,
ready to swing into action was am-
ple reward for all the countless
meetings, letters and hours that went
into bringing it into reality,

Hospital Association called the
hospital "a monument to this
generation".
"This project certainly stands out
as the greatest effort ever undertaken
in this district," stated R.N. Creech,
finance chairman."
Local doctors, M.C. Fletcher, J.G.
Dunlop, F.). Milner, F.1. Butson and
F.J. Morlock, were all loud in their
praise of the new facilities. Said Dr.
Fletcher, "A hospital in South Huron
meets a long and increasing need in
this community."
Among the guests were Mrs.
Louise Craig of Exeter, whose father,
William Carling, had been born in
the Carling house.
During the two day Open House,
ladies of the auxiliary served
refreshments while members of the
association conducted tours of the
building.
Opening day for patients was
February 3, 1953 at 1:00 p.m. The
hospital contained 37 beds.
