the venturr? had become too am-
bitious for he small community of
South Huron.
In its concern, the association turn-
ed to Helge Jensen, a local builder.
His knowledge of construction
wasn't small as he had constructed
several buildings larger than the
hospital in his native Denmark. After
World War II, he had settled in Ex-
eter and opend a furniture plant
where the Exeter Furniture is now
located.
He assured the members money
could be saved by cutting costs to the
bone. Enthusiasm resurged; the
association made a firm decision to
go ahead and build. The Carling
home was purchased on November
8 1951, for $16,000 and Jensen was
officially appointed construction
supervisor. The hospital was back on
track!
CONSTRUCTION BEGINS — Workmen began preparing the grounds of the
Carling Estate for construction of the hospital in March, 1952. Part of the
Carling house was removed. The hospital was built in less than

He also incorporated the Carling
house into the hospital's future use.
Finally, in February of 1952, the
grounds were being prepared for the
excavation.
Helge Jensen went to work on the
plans, broke the construction dole n
to the last detail, noted where money
could be saved by using local labour
and purchasing materials through
area businesses wherever possible

and discuss its problems and pro-
gresses. The building committee
reported, each month, on the con-
truction while the finance committee
kept members up to date on the can-
vass. Again, the local service clubs
staged many events to raise more
money.
When Southcott Pines offered to
donate a building lot, the Exeter and
Grand Bend Lion's Clubs decided to
build and raffle a cottage, from the
plans drawn up by Jake Swietzer.
When the winning ticket was drawn
in the fall, Phonse Payton of St. Marys
was the lucky owner of the cottage
and the Hospital Association was
richer by $10,000.
Meanwhile the walls of the hospital
were taking shape. In June, Helge
Jensen announced to the association
that he would soon be ready for the
electricians and plumbers. "Then",
he said, "the building will really
begin to step along".
And step along it did. It was finish -
