SH field hockey team fourth in Ontario
South Huron's girls field
hockey team ended their
spectacular season in the
respectable position of fourth
in all of Ontario. The all -
Ontario finals were held in
Peterborough last weekend.
The appearance of the Pan-
thers in OFSAA marks the
fourth year they have
qualified for the tournament.
Jim Workman, coach of the
team, is proud of his team's
effort and notes that the girls
are in a special class all of
their own with their su^cess.
At the tournament, they
were one of the two out of 10
schools that were in rural
regions. The remaining
schools were mostly from the
Toronto area.

in that they have opportunity
to play hockey not only at
school,but during the summer
on inner-city league teams.
However, South Huron has
always been able to provide
reasonable opposition to more
experienced teams and is a
well respected team.
The OFSAA tournament
began Thursday and South
Huron played the first of its
matches against Havergal, a
private girls school from
Toronto. The game was a
close one and Pauline Brand
saved the team from tieing 1-1
by scoring precisely on the
last second. South Huron
therefore won the game and

The Exeter midgets were
on the short end of the score
in two Shamrock minor
league hockey games to
Parkhill this week.
Wednesday in Exeter,
Parkhill came up with a 6-3
decision and on home ice
Friday blanked the Exeter
club 8-0.
In Wednesday's game in
Exeter, Parkhill jumped into
a 4-0 lead early in the third
period before the Exeter club
could hit the scoreboard.
The first Exeter goal came
from the stick of Steve Gould
with assists going to captain
Scott Bogart and John
Hannah.
The second successful shot
was fired by Andy Lerikos on
a three way passing combina-
tion with Jim Lewis and
Terry Zachar.
Jeff Pfaff completed the
Exeter scoring on a play set
the tournament.
This meeting was supposed
to take place the next day.
However, it snowed for most
of Thursday night leaving six
inches of the detestable white
stuff on the ground. This
made play an impossibility
and the game was postponed
until the final day of the tour-
nament, Saturday.
Saturday morning, as much
as possible of the remaining
snow on the field was cleaned
off and South Huron played
their second match. The
game resulted in a 1-1 tie. In
order to break a tie, each
team is allowed to take five
penalty shots on the other.
The team scoring more goals
than the other wins the
match.

Kirk Campbell led the
Parkhill scoring attack with a
two goal effort. Scoring in
single fashion .were Dave
Shipley, Bren: Martin, Cam
MacDonald and,Paul Barnes.
Coach Ron Bogart said,
"We came on a bit in the third
period, but, just couldn't keep
the edge. We would score and
then Parkhill would just come
back and get an easy one."
On the 8-0 loss to Parkhill
Bogart said, "We were just
making too many little basic
mistakes and it cost us. When
we start eliminating these
mistakes things will hopeful-
ly be better."
Brent Martin was best for
Parkhill with three goals
while Paul Barnes con-
tributed two successful shots
and Brad Muir, Dave Shipley
and Cam MacDonald scored
in single fashion.

A.I. Stewart managed to
score on three of these shots
while the Panthers only
managed two and therefore
lost the game.
Even with their loss, the
chance of finishing in the top
three was still a possibility for
the Panthers. The next game
for the girls was a semi-fi,.al
against a team from Bayview
High school in Thornhill.
At the end of regulation
time, South Huron was tied
with Bayview 0-0. Because
the game was a play=off, in-
stead of immediately taking
penalty shots, the teams went
into overtime. Still, no victor
emerged. The teams then
reverted to penalty strokes to
determine a winner.
The first set of shots still
left the girls dead -locked with
tie of 2-2.
The next two sets again pro-
duced only tie scores until
finally in the fourth reund of
penalty shots Bayview beat
South Huron 2-1. The loss
mentally drained the team
and eliminated all hope of get-
ting the silver medal.
Still, South Huron had a
chance of at least capturing
the bronze medal for third
place. In their last game,
South Huron faced Steven
Leacock High School for Scar-
borough. This game was their
third in a row and for some of
the girls this meant that
finishing this game would
mean finishing five and a half
hours of field hockey.
Coach Workman said "The
weather fouled us up and the
fact that we were the only
team that had to play three
games in a row really screw-
ed us up." Tired and facing
cold weather, the Panthers
lost the game 2-0.
This left South Huron fourth
overall in all of Ontario, a feat
South Huron should be proud
of. The tournament brings
field hockey to an end for this
school year and Workman is
clearly satisfied with the
team's performance.
As predictions : bout next
year, Workman says he'll just
have to wait and see. The
team was recently featured
on CFPL radio's Athletes of
the Week show where South
Huron's success was com-
pared to that of a dynasty. As
things stand, the Panthers
should probably be able to
duplicate some of their suc-
cess next year.

Bantams get
pair of wins
Exeter Legion bantams ran
their season's record to 4-2
with a pair of victories and a
single loss in last week's
action.
Wednesday night at home,
the locals opened up a 4-0
lead, then held on to register
a 4-2 victory over Parkhill.
Steve Anderson got Exeter
rallying with two first period
goals on assists by Mark
Coward, Jeff Dalrymple and
Tim Moore. Jon O'Connor
also scored in the first period,
converting a pass from
Shawn Moore and then added
his second of the night in the
second period with help from
Steve Lingard. Jason Leslie
scored both Parkhill goals in
the third period as Parkhill
mounted a comeback attempt
that was thwarted by the fine
goaltending of Scott
Heywood.
In Strathroy, Thursday, Ex-
eter stayed close for two
periods before succumbing to
a strong Strathroy attack on
their way to a 7-1 drubbing.
Lingard produced the only
goal for the locals with help
from O'Connor.
In a return engagement in
Parkhill on Sunday, Leslie put
the home team ahead in the
first period before Exeter
rallied for a 3-1 victory.
O'Connor scored two goals for
Exeter on assists from
Lingard and Jeff Hannah.
Paul Mellecke sealed the
win with an empty net goal on
an assist from Tim Moore.
Fred Gregus was solid in the
Exeter net particularly in the
third period when Parkhill
had a wide edge in scoring
opportunities.
The previous week Exeter
gained a split, winning 4-3 in
Ilderton Monday before losing
a tough 3-2 decision to
Strathroy at home,
Wednesday.
Against Ilderton, the locals
blew a 3-0 lead generated on
two goals by O'Connor and a
single by Dalrymple. After 11-
derton knotted the count, with
three straight goals, Darryl
McCann notched the winner
when he banged in a rebound
on a shot by O'Connor.
Lingard scored,. twice to
stake his team to a 2-0 lead
against Strathroy before the
winners responded with three
straight goals. O'Connor pick-
ed up assists on both goals
with Hannah helped out on
one. Heywood again was
sharp in goal for Exeter.

Perth Conference champion-
ship. This opportunity was the
result of South Huron's vic-
tory over Listowel in the
semi-final, Thursday.
The game was played on a
bitterly cold day with a strong
north wind. This made both
passing and kicking in the
game very difficult and at
times created tremendous
disadvantages.
Right off the bat, Listowel
scored a single on the kickoff
which was kicked with the
wind and driven back into the
South Huron end zone. In the
second quarter, South Huron
took advantage of the wind to
drive in 16 points, making the
score 16-3 at halftime.
South Huron gave Listowel
the wind at the beginning of
the second half so they could
have it in the fourth quarter.
This strategy seemed to work
and South Huron kept
Listowel from scoring in the
third quarter. The Panthers
regained the wind in the
fourth and used to it to help
score two touchdowns in the
fourth quarter.
Bill Fisher scored two
touchdowns and carried the
ball 15 times fora total of 170
yards.SeanWhiteford scored
off a 3u yard pass from Scott
Miller. Miller himself scored
a touchdown on a short four
yard run. He also threw to
Sean for a two point convert
and kicked a single. Brian

OIG GAIN — Running back Bill Fisher rambles for one
of several big gainers he recorded in the league semi-
final against Listowel, Thursday.
Good cross country
season is completed
A very successful cross-
country season ended Satur-
day at the OFSAA meet in
London. The senior girls team
finished tenth overall,
somewhat below expecta-
tions, while the midgets girls
ran well to place twelfth in
Ontario.
The London Ski Club course
was in good condition and the
weather beautiful as runners
from all over Ontario
challenged the difficult races.
With over 200 runners in
each race, the start was a
mass of surging bodies. South
Huron runner Catherine Pat-
terson described it as "a hor-
row show. I had to hurdle
screaming bodies all over."
This difficulty forced the
midget team to the back of
the pack and passing was
hazardous in the woods. After
being trampled at the start,
resulting in a gashed leg and
spike marked knees, Lindy
Dillon moved up to finish 66 in
13:02.
Jeanette VanEsbroeck ran
69th while Barb Lawson got
caught back in 115th.
Kathleen Little and Paulette
Rauthbauer were 126 and 175
respectively. In an all -Ontario
race these finishes are quite
respectable.
Coach Joe Fulop determin-
ed that the midgets could
have been eighth with a pro-
per start. WOSSA champs
from CCH were seventh.
While these strong midget
runners are just beginning.
promising cross country
careers several senior run-
ners saw their last high school
cross country race at OFSAA.
All senior girls bettered
their times from WOSSA,
over the same course, but the
competition was considerably
tougher. Last year the team's
fifth place with 247 points was
close to 1983's 296 points but
the finish was considerably
farther back.
Using her incredible pass-
ing ability Sheila Regier mov-
ed up to 40 spot. Returning the
night before on a six hour bus
ride from the OFSAA field
hockey in Peterborough,
Catherine Patterson was 71.
Mary Lou Rundle overcame
her tonsillitis to place 74.
Susan Sullivan realizing she
was South Huron's fourth run-
ner came in at 111.
Irene Dietrich, normally
the fourth runner ran with a
pulled rear muscle and also
went over on her ankle early
in the race. She ran the whole
course in great pain. The
team felt her loss and Fulop
figures with her the team
could have moved up to
seventh.
Sue Birmingham was 112th
and Esther Van Oss 116th in
well-run races. Tracey
Ducharme, Irene Dietrich,
Sandra Hullebusch and
Angela Fleming were in the
100's.
The senior girls' season was
somewhat disappointing.
Fulop laments the injuries
that have plagued his run-
ners. Top runner Colleen
Regier gave her support from
the sidelines with a pin in her
leg from an automobile
accident.
However, with a lot of talent
returning, South Huron will
keep its standing as a strong
cross-country team both in
boys as well as girls
competition.

The Huron -Perth final
takes place this Saturday at
1:30 over at the South Huron
field. The team plays their
arch -rivals, the Goderich Vik-
ings in what promises to be a
good match.
In league play South Huron
defeated Goderich 2-1 in a
game totally decided on safe-
ty touches. The final will tru-
ly decide who the be football
team in Huron -Perth is.
GOT IT — Despite falling down on the job, SHDHS
junior Panther Sean Whiteford still managed to hang
on to this pass for a two-point convert in Thursday's
Huron -Perth semi-final against Listowel. The squad
easily won 30-3 and face Goderich in the final at the
local field on Saturday afternoon.
