Times-Advocate, 1983-10-26, Page 10Pogo 10 Times -Advocate, October 26, 1983 Sports Spotlight By Ross Haugh Lincolns flying There is a lot of local interest this year in the for- tunes of the St. Marys Lincolns in this area and their fortunes are riding high. The Lincolns under head coach Jeff Van Vliet at the time of writing are undefeated and atop the standings in the. Western Junior "B" league. With eight victories and three ties in 11 starts, the Lincolns are three points up on the second place Sar- nia Bees and five points up on Windsor. Playing prominent roles in the Lincolns success to date are three area youngsters. They are Exeter's John Kernick, Jeff Shipley from Lucan and Pat Cyr from turich. Kernick in his second year with the Lincolns was named tookie of the year during the 1982-83 season. More on Pooleys The Ohio State hockey Buckeyes are off to a flying start in United States intercollegiate hockey this year and Exeter natives Paul and Perry Pooley are showing the way. In their third year at Columbus, the twin brothers are right at the top of the team scoring after three games. Paul, the team captain is tied for the scoring lead with Dave Kobryn at seven points with Perry is right behind with six points. Each of the Pooley has scored a game winning goal while Perry has scored twice on power plays and Paul has notched one with his team having a man advantage. Foot.still a big help A quick look at the scoring leaders in the Canadian football_ league proves the foot still plays a big part in our fall pastime. The first nine players atop the scoring parade are field goal and convert kickers from each of the clubs. Lou Passaglia of British Columbia is the leader with 164 points and a seven point margin over Trevor Kennerd of Winnipeg. With the schedule in the CFL coming to a quick close, a couple of playoff spots are still up for grabs. The Edmonton Eskimos who have ruled the roost in the western conference for a long time are in danger of watching playoff action from the sidelines. The Eskimos hold a two point lead over the Calgary Stampeders for the third and final playoff position, but, Calgary has one game in hand. The final game for the Eskimos • is against the Toronto Argonauts who lead the eastern division by four. points over Ottawa. In the east, the playoff question is also for third place between Hamilton and Montreal. Although the Tiger Cats lead Montreal by two points, the Concorde are coming on strong and Hamilton didn't look too great in losing 41-16 to British Columbia Saturday night. Saturday's 27-8 win for the Concorde over Calgary was a big boost for the team and coach Joe Galat. It was so big that coach Galat allowed his 'players to kick spare footballs into the st..nds after the victory. The crowd in Montreai Saturday was 27,573, the largest attendance since the Concorde took over the Alouettes. One of the valuable standbys of the Corcorde con- tinues to be Glenn Weir who is in his 12th year in the league. The number 64 is very evident as the Montreal front four try to stop the opposing offences. Although. the British Columbia Lions have clinch- ed first place in the west we like the Winnipeg Blue Bombers despite the loss of running back Willard Reaves through a knee injury for the rest of the season. John Hufnagel has been giving the Blue Bombers good quarterbacking since Tom Clements was injured. The latter is expected to be ready for some playoff action. In the east, the Toronto Argos should take all the marbles and head for B.C. and the November 26 play- ing of the Grey Cup. How about the Argos and Winnipeg? Panther teams rolling This fall has been very successful for the sporting teams at South Huron District High School with a number of great performances. Jim Workman's girls field hockey team has won the Huron -Perth championship for a record number of times and are shooting for WOSSA and all -Ontario recogni tion. Not only has Workman's team gone through the regular and playoff season undefeated 'they are also unscored upon. That's a great achievement. Terry O'Rourke's senior girls basketball team led by the high scoring Faye Gaiser won the recent Med- way High School tournament. One of the big ac- complishments at Medway was defeating London Saunders 34-25. Only a few weeks ago, Saunders defeated the South Huron girls 43-19. In cross country meets, coach Joe Fulop has been getting great performances from his team and a large number of the runners have qualified for the WOSSA championships to be held at the London Ski Club on Fri- day, October 28. The London ski club will also host the all -Ontario cross country championships. the following Saturday. In football, coach Dave Cox has his junior gridders in high gear. They are undefeated to date and certain- ly have a good shot at a Huron -Perth championship. Nawks only unbeaten club in Junior 'D' By virtue of an 11-4 romp over Thedford, Friday, the Fxeter Hawks remain the on- iy undefeated team in the nor- thern division of the Western, Junior "D" loop. Lucan •and Seaforth, who both lead the Hawks in the standings due to playing more games, dropped decisions on Sunday to Thedford and Tavistock respectively, as the latter squads posted their first wins of the season. The 2-0-1 Hawks will face Seaforth at the rec centre this Friday in one of their crucial tests in the young season. The Centenaires have been bolstered byseveral key players from the defunct Mit- chell hawks and lead Exeter by two points. Seaforth also features three players from Hensall, in- cluding former Hawk Ian Munroe, and this adds to the rivalry between the two squads who have given early indications of being in the thick of the battle for league supremacy. In Friday's romp, the Hawks took full advantage of an inept Thedford perfor- mance to boost their early season statistics with 27 scor ing points. The Browns had four regulars sitting out with suspension and were never in the game, despite the fact the Hawks gave them several powerplay opportunities as the locals sat out 18 penalties which included three occa- Waxers drop a 3-1 decision The Exeter Waxers, novice hockey team played their third game of the season Sun- day suffering a 3-1 Toss to Parkhill with the final goal in- to an empty net .as Exeter pulled goalie Darren Kints in an attempt to even the score. Even then the Browns couldn't get any team effort co-ordinated as they general- ly shot the puck in and had the Hawks penalty killers shoot it back out to keep the pressure off netminder Dave Rook. A couple of defensive miscues did allow the Browns to score, but Rook had only a handful of difficult shots to turn aside. Exeter opened the scoring at the 2:S4 mark.of the'first frame and went on to build a 5-0 lead. The teams traded two goals each in the middle stanza and Exeter out -scored the Browns by a 4-2 margin in the third as they coasted to the triumph. Four of the tallies came on the powerplay, while Thed- ford managed -only two tallies while they enjoyed a man advantage.
