Building inspector Herman Van Wieren issued two building permits during the month of September for a total value of $16,000 along with one demolition permit. He also made 40 inspections_ The tile drainage inspec- tor's report indicated two new tile drain loan applications valued at $3,000 were approved. Application is being made for Usborne's grant ap- propriation for Ontario's 1984 Bicentennial. Council accpeted a petition from Ernie Szabo, Glen McElrea and others for a municipal drain in their area and K. Smart and Associates of Kitchener were appointed to prepare a survey, plan and report. The drain is on Con- cession 12 with outlet to the Stone drain. Bylaws are being prepared for the E Drain of the Pridham Drain report and will be served on the affected landowners in time for the. November meeting and tenders are being called to close by October 31. Attending the drain meeting were engineerf \V..1 Dietrich and affected ratepayers Murray Christie and Theodorus \'ink - Answer not forthcoming When Exeter council decid- ed to name a sergeant for the local police department one of the main reasons for the move was to provide a backup in the absence of the chief. Mayor Br:,ce Shaw therefore wondered this week how Sgt. Kevin Short could go on holidays at a time when Chief Ted Day was off on sick leave. Ile said the rationale in ap- pointing a sergeant was to avoid situations where of- ficers had- to assume some aspects of the chief's duties but not be paid for the extra work or responsibility. Police committee chairman Gaylan Josephson said he was unable to answer the Mayor's questions regarding the situation. His report to council on police activities during the past month show- ed that Chief Day was on sick leave for 22 days.
