When Exeter council decid-
ed to name a sergeant for the
local police department one of
the main reasons for the
move was to provide a backup
in the absence of the chief.
Mayor Br:,ce Shaw
therefore wondered this week
how Sgt. Kevin Short could go
on holidays at a time when
Chief Ted Day was off on sick
leave.
Ile said the rationale in ap-
pointing a sergeant was to
avoid situations where of-
ficers had- to assume some
aspects of the chief's duties
but not be paid for the extra
work or responsibility.
Police committee chairman
Gaylan Josephson said he
was unable to answer the
Mayor's questions regarding
the situation. His report to
council on police activities
during the past month show-
ed that Chief Day was on sick
leave for 22 days.
