SH seniors win championship
p p
South Huron's senior girls
basketball won the champion-
ship at the Medway tourna-
ment last weekend. The team
also increased its league
record to five wins and a loss,
as the Huron -Perth schedule
enters its final half.
At Medway, SH defeated
Saunders, 34-25, a team who
a few busy weeks ago trampl-
ed Exeter 43-19. Their im-
provement is evident as they
easily disposed of the Sabres.
Next, Wallaceburg was
eliminated by Exeter, 42-31.
In the finals South Huron
defeated the host school 28-26.
In the whole tournament Fav
Gaiser scored 49 points, Alice
Dietrich 26, and Leslie
Hunter-Duvar had 15 points.
The team's first tournament
championship this year was
well-deserved by the talented
squad.
In league play, South Huron
has been practising mercy by
not running up the score on
less -gifted teams.
Norwell was defeated 57-17
Wednesday. Gaiser had 22
points, Dietrich scored 14 and
first year senior Andrea Zim-
mer added 9 points.
Listowel was next to go
down by a 34-17 margin.
Gaiserconti nued to lead the
team's scoring with 14 points.

get two wins
The Exeter Molting Hawks
scored back-to-back victories
over London CFB in oldtimer
hockey play over the
weekend.
Saturday in Dorchester the
Hawks won by an easy 10-1
score as goalie Glenn Stire
came within one minute and
49 seconds of a shutout.
In Exeter Monday, the
home club recorded a 5-3
.victory.
Scoring was well spread
around in the 10-1 win. Keith
Ahrens and Pete McFalls
each fired two successful
shots while Bill Pincombe,
Frank Boyle, Mike Cushman,
Jack Chipchase, Bob Jones
ar•,i Jim Russell scored in
single fashion,
Walt Tiedeman picked up
two asssists while Jim Pfaff,
Al Rundle, Cushman, Jones,
Ahrens, McFalls and Boyle
each helped on one goal.
Jim MacDonald was the top
scorer with a two goal perfor-
mance in Monday's 5-3 win.
Getting one goal apiece were
Mike Cushman, Jim Russell
and Eric F'inkbeiner.
an ankle injury, valuable
point maker, Leslie Hunter-
Duvar scored four points.
Leslie has been able to play
well, lately but coach Terry
O'Rourke doubts that she will
be at full capacity for the re-
mainder of the season.
Monday, most of the cagers
contributed points to the 54-25
win over Wingham.
South Huron will probably
get another chance to be mer-
ciful against Clinton today. It
is questionable who transfer-
red principal Joe Wooden will
be cheering for in that match.
Tomorrow South Huron
hosts Clarke Road of London
for an exhibition game. Ex-
perience will be gained as the
seniors take on the Fanshawe
College team here on
Tuesday.
South Huron will strive for
a near -flawless record at St.
Marys on Monday. Their on-
ly league loss has been to
Goderich, who last week
decisively beat the possible
threat from Stratford Central.
Exeter meets the Ramblers
for a key game on the final
day of league play, October
31.
Junior girls
Halfway through the
regular season South Huron's
junior girls basketball team
has set their sights on the
final playoff position in the
Huron -Perth league. Two
league wins this past week
has brought the young squad
to a two and four win -loss
record.
Motivated on their home
court, South Huron's juniors
established thei, first league
victory over Norwell last
Wednesday. Spunky Dianne
Dearing scored nine points
and Karen Rowe four in the
41-27 win.
Despite such a heartening
win the juniors lost to
Listowel the next day 22-15. In
the low scoring game few
shots were attempted by the
comparable teams. Kelly
Whiteford had 8 points, four of
which were from foul shots.
Listowel's weekend tourna-
ment offered South Huron
good competition and
valuable experience. After
being completely blown away
by a team from Elmira, South
Huron rallied against Madill
but the Wingham girls sunk
one in the final seconds to win
20-19. Another close game
went to Clinton 22-17. Coach
Pat Rowe mentioned that she
uses these exhibition tour-
naments to give all players
court time.
It took three tries but Ex-
eter's juniors finally defeated
Madill, and when it counts. In
recent exhibition play
Wingham had been victorious
but each time showed a
smaller point spread until
Monday it was reversed,
26-21. Kelly Whiteford scored
eight points while Karen
Rowe added six points.
The juniors will try to
repeat a win as they meet
Clinton today. Exhibition
games between the evenly
matched teams have been
close so the juniors will have
a chance to improve the
league standings. Next Mon-
day, South Huron plays at St.
Marys.

READY FOR H•P — The South Huron girls field hockey team with on undefeated
and unscored on record are in the Huron -Perth final tomorrow. Above, coach Jim
Workrlaon talks to his players during a recent workout.
Field hockey undefeated
South Huron Panthers field
hockey team finished regular
season play last week in full
force. The team ended its
year in first place with an
unblemished five and nothing
win -loss record. In five
regular season games played
and four exhibition matches
the girls completely shutout
the opposition.
Their last regular season
game was played in Exeter
Wednesday against Norwell.
The Panthers dominated in
what can needlessly . be
described as a one sided
game, as they won 9-0.
Pauline Brand led the scor-
ing with 4 goals followed by
Pauline DeVries who added
two more. Kendra Arthur,
Ronalyn Bell and Julie
Russell all scored as well.
The next day, an exhibition
match was held to determine
whether the Huron -Perth
final match will be played in
Exeter or at SI. Marys, home
of the Panthers' challengers
this year. South Huron won
that match c5-0► and
therefore the final will be
played at the high school
tomorrow.
Coach Jim Workman was
impressed by Thursday's
game. It was played trader
terrible conditions, the field
reduced to a mud puddle after
heavy rain. Still, Workman
stated that the game was very
exciting and that both price
played well
