Only one Junior Hawks team
The OIIA Western Junior '•A" hockey league ready
to start a new schedule in October will only have one
Hawks team this year and that is from Exeter.
A news story in the Mitchell Advocate last week in-
dicated the Mitchell Hawks are folding.
Bert McMann who has been the ,ti1itchell manager
for more than 10 years made the announcement citing
the lack of players as the main reason for disbanding.
McMann continued. "We played a lot of midgets
last year, but., it just isn't feasible -to get a team together
this year. 11 would be like banging your head against
the wall. Several of last year's players are going away
to school."
The Mitchell manager said any of the Hawks
players who want to go to Seaforth to play may do so.
The Mitchell Hawks won the 1967 O11AJunior D
championship. McMann said he hoped the Hawks ex-
ecutive could be kept intact and help in furthing minor
hockey in Mitchell.
The Exeter Hawks have already completed four or
five practices and are getting ready for an exhibition
game on Sunday, September 25 at the Stephen township
arena with the Lucan Ir•isit supplying the opposition.
Game time is 7 p.m. Friday, September 30 at 8:30 p.m.
the Seaforth club will meet the Hawks.
Talking about exhibition hockey. the Clinton Colts
;anion C team can be seen in action in two upcoming
contests at the Stephen arena.
The Clinton team will be taking on the Junior B St. -
Marys Lincolns this Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the
Huron Park arena. Exeter minor hockey graduate John
Kernick is in his second season with the Lincolns. 1 le
was named St. \1ar'.•s rookie of the year for last season.
On Sunday, September 25 at 1 p.m. the New Ham-
burg junior B club «rill be in to take on the Clinton Colts.
With the unusually \varm :weather for SeI)tetnber
it's difficult to get interested in hockey. but, the Stephen
arena is busy with a lot 01 teats getting anxious to start
practices and games.
The Exeter Hawks practice scheduled for 3 p.m.
Sunday was cancelled when (he ice machines at the
Stephen arena broke down. hut. may a. couple of hours
later manager Frank Funston had :e new motor install-
ed and the ice was ready and practices resumed.
The regular Western Junior 1) season for the llawks
starts Friday, October 14 at the South I luron Rec ('en-
tre with the Lucan Irish again providing the opposition.
With the loss of the \litchell Hawks, the junior
league now has five teams in each of the northern and
southern divisions.
In audition to Exeter and Lucan• the other northern
teams are from Tavistock, Seaforlh and '17hedfor'd. in
the south, Bothwell is a new entry to go with establish-
ed entries from fort Stanlew. Belmont,'I'hamesford and
Mount Brydges
Ga //WS of uuinhers now
,Vith less than three veeks rentautiiig in the regular
schedules of the two major Ieagtres (s ch day now we
hear a lot of numbers thrown around.
The numbers Will be the total 01 a combination of
the number oI- wins rankled by the team on top and the
losses by any of the contenders.
Al the moment the magic num be'r for the Chicago
White Sox to capture the American league pennant is
four and with almost '2u games remaining they are a
lead pipe clinch to win.
In the American league east it a slight ly different
story with the Baltimore Orioles holding a five and a
half game margin over Detroit and eight and a half over
the fifth place Toronto Blue •Jay s.
If Baltimore wins 1.0 of their retraining 22 games
and that is very probable. the Detrol! Tigers would have
to win 1-tiof their next 19 ganies and •1'01 0111► would need
16 victories in 17 starts to end in a lie with the Orioles
For Baltimoi e over Detroit the -111i1V.Ir rnimher is 15 and
for Toronto it's 12.
'lir the four Ieamsslillin contention in the \a11e)81
League east, the numbers are still quite high with the
Expos holding a hall game margin ower 1'hiheetclphia.
one.and a hall fiver 1.1115 .end Iwo hell games ahead
of Pittsburgh.
i1 looks like the magic number for the Expos al the
moment is l combination of their wins and Philadelphia
defeats adding tip lo 21. For the other Iwo clubs it is on-
ly slightly less.
