Times Advocate, 1999-12-22, Page 23www.ford.caloffers Wednesday, December 22, 1999 Exeter TImes,Adreene. 23 Sports Lakers continue to go with the flow Continued from page 22 Woodstock; assistant coach Mark Rowe of Goderich, trainer Dave Fischer and manager Tracy Fischer both of Staffa. Current record (as of Dec. 20, 1999): 9-6-2 reg- ular season, 9-5-1 tour- naments, 5-2 exhibition, 23-13-3 overall. Strengths: great goal- tending, big defence, fast, shifty forwards and big wingers. Weaknesses: in the first part of the season the inability to stay away from retaliatory penal- ties; using the defence for more offensive scoring chances. Style of play: nice short passes; keeping all three attacking lanes intact; cycling the puck; crash- ing the net; reversing the flow. Changes this year: two new defencemen, four new forwards. Challenges: getting used to lowscoring games at 'AAA' level; playing hard every shift. • Goals: to,develop as *a 'team; achieve to the fullest of their ability; making friendships that last a lifetime; win the Alliagc.e; get to the all- ,Qntarlos. Highlights so far: final- ists at Little Caesars tour- nament in. Wate;leo; finalists .'Tat' Oshawa Kinsmen tournament; defeating Brantford in ;,Waterloo tourney; taking Compuware to overtime in Oshawa. .Players from the T -A coverage area: •Exeter's Murray Youmans — big, physi- cal, good skating defence - man. •Brucefield's Cal O'Reilly — very good skater and puckhandler. •Exeter's Nick Anstett (forward) — physical presence a great asset; loves the tough going. •Varna's Kyle Courtney — great speed and shifti- ness, sees the ice well. Coaches note: in the regular season all players played fairly (including on powerplay and penalty kill). There is no captain (different alternates each game) though each play- er would be a leader in their home centre. . • Last word: "The major peewee team is really coming together due to their great work ethic and their willingness to learn. We as coaches are. • really hoping . to keep this ball rolling throughout the second half of the schedule and the playoffs. It is a great group of indi- viduals to be associated with and I could only encourage other players In the zone to come out end ghfe it a chance as I don't feel they would yegtet.thelr decision."
