McMillan This week I will be in the Huron county elementary schools of the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board. The main focus of this visit is to meet with grade 7 and 8 students from all 8 elementary schools to discuss our plans for next year and to answer any questions which may arise regarding enrollment at St. Anne's. Next year will be the sec- ond year for music at St. Anne's. The addition of music, forms a significant change in what is already available to students as they enroll at St. Anne's. Students will have the opportunity to select Drama, Music or Visual Art if they select Arts as one of two grade nine options. There is some discussion presently about beginning a music dub to create a band at St. Anne's. The focus of this visit is to help students bet- ter understand what high school is like and to realize there is a change from ele- mentary to secondary schools. St Anne's will continue to have semesters from grade 9 to OAC. There is also some dis- cussion in our school com- munity about the potential for school uniforms. There is a meeting scheduled for all parents of students who will be attending St. Anne's. This meeting is slated for .the '15th of December and will form the basis of our school council meeting. A sub–committee of the School Advisory Council has worked extensively on this issue and the evening will deal with various issues related to the con- cept of a uniform. This meeting is open to the par- ents of all students cur- rently enrolled and the parents of students who plan to attend grade 9 in September of 2000 and 2001. We are aware that a conflict does exist with some schools as their Christmas concert is scheduled for the same night. We will stage a smaller version of this meeting in early January to answer the concerns of the parents in these school communities. At this meeting parents will have the opportunity to listen to the issue discussed and at the close of the meeting will be given the opportu- nity to vote to accept or reject the concept. The important issue is that all stakeholders make an informed choice and that out of the dialogue we hope to reach an accept- able consensus. • Parents will be asked to identify themselves as in a polling station on entry to the meeting so that we will be able to send a ballot out to parents unable to attend one of the information nights. This meeting will be an opportunity for par- ents to openly share their views on the topic of school uniforms. r •. .' r s ..
