HURON PARK Rod Hippern didn't think much
about catching► a He was just doing his job.
But the Hui irk grandfather got noticed by his
peers for his urave deed with a Commandant's
- Commendation Medal for Service from the Corps of
Commissionaires London Branch at a special dinner
held in Hippern's honour at Wolseley Barracks in
London on Oct. 26.
Hippem was working as a security guard at London's
Residence. Inn in December '98 when he thought he
heard something out of place. Upon investigating, he
found someone who wasn't supposed to be there in a
corner with a TV.
"I didn't know what I was going to do," Hippem, 61,
said. "I wasn't armed."
What he did do was think quick on his feet and say
something the thief couldn't forget.
"I said 'If you want to stay healthy stay where you
Then Hippem radioed for help which came in about
30 seconds. The .. prit was eventually placed in police
custody. Hipperi umes the man pleaded guilty to the
crime since he itiltrnot called in to court to testify.
Hippem wasn't expecting special recognition.
"It was a surprise," he said. "We're doing what we're
supposed to do. That's why I didn't think too much
about it. I was doing my job."
This isn't the first time Hippern has been honoured
for nabbing a bad guy.
At about 4 a.m. one morning in '90, Hippern helped
catch two men stealing a battery at Centralia College.
After discovering the two men, they took off. Upon fur-
ther investigation, Hippern came across a suspicious
car parked at the college. He called the OPP sharing the
car's licence plate number and the police caught the
suspects a half hour later.
Hippern received a commendation from the Exeter
OPP for helping catch the would-be thieves.
Hippem works as a security guard on contract with
the Corps of Commissionaires. The Corps is made up
mostly of retired military service personnel and RCMP.
Hippem served six years in the army stationed mainly
at Ipperwash.
Hippern did security at Centralia College for five years
and filled in on weekends at Grand Bend's Southcott
Pines but has also worked throughout southern Ontario.
"I've done 1,000 places," he said.
Those places include Sarnia's Imperial Oil and
London's Diamond Airlines.
"We're pretty busy guys," he said.
Hippern came to Ontario from his native
Newfoundland in 1970. He has worked as a commis-
sionaire for the past 10 years.
Married to his wife Gloria for 27 years, the couple
have a grown son, Jay. Hippern has two grown children
from a previous marriage, Derek and Roxanne, and
four grandchildren.
