EXETER -- A hot pow-
'rplay and an even hotter
goaltender spelled doom
'or the Exeter Jr. D
-lawks at home versus
-Iwy. 4 rivals the Lucan
:rish Friday night.
Lucan bested Exeter 4-0
Nith Trish goaltender
Marc Williams earning
the shutout.
Kevin Dunbar got the
!rish on the scoreboard
while on the powerplay at
3:28 of the first period
Loin Corey Smith and
Ben Dobbie. Mike Burns
made it 2-0 by scoring a
minute later from Darrel
Parsons and Dobbie.
Lucan stole any fresh-
ness the Hawks had after
the first intermission by
scoring a powerplay goal
► 57 seconds into the
frame. Smith got the goal
from Dunbar and Andrew
Moriarity.
Lucan's Greg Henderson
scored his team's final
goal with 6:26 left in the
game from Burns.
Exeter threw 28 shots at
Williams while Hawks
goaltender Ryan 011son
faced 22 shots.
The game ended on a
sour note with two
Hawks, Shawn Sherwood
and Chris Corlett, both
given double minors for
facemasking. The two
also landed fighting
majors and game miscon-
ducts in tilts with Lucan's
Scott Wheatley and Ryan
Keating who also got
ar
fighting majors and game
misconducts.
Hawks coach Andy
Friyia apologized for the
Corlett incident.
"I'm embarrassed about
my team's attack on Ryan
Keating," he said, adding
Corlett didn't dress for
Saturday's game and
dressed but didn't play
during Sunday's game.
As far as the rest of the
game, a slow start proved
costly for Exeter, Friyia
said.
"We came out flat again
in the first half of the first
period," he said.
Friyia added the play of
Williams played a big fac-
tor.
Lucan coach Bill Bourne
accepted Friyia's apology
for Corlett's actions but
pointed out that doesn't
explain the cross-check-
ing attack by Jeremy
Vanbergen in the first
period (he got a five
minute major and a game
misconduct) or the
Sherwood incident.
Bourne said the Exeter
game "went pretty well as
advertised" with both
teams showing a lot of
emotion. His team's disci-
pline proved to be better,
he said.
Exeter • rebounded
Saturday with a 8-5 road
win at Parkhill North
Middlesex. Jeff Glover
scored two goals for the
Hawks, the first to make
it 1-0 from Sherwood and
Jaakko Heikkinen and the
second to make it 8-5 in
the dying seconds of the

Farquhar and Ben
McCann.
Other Exeter goals were
scored by Jeremy
Geoffrey, Nick Regier,
Jarrett Jeffrey, Jason
Grenier, Jon ;Keys and
Tylet McTavish with
assists Nlover, Henny
Pfaff, Ms, Berton
Dykstra (2), Jon Miller (2),
Regier and Jarred
Bourne.
Hawks goaltender Ryan
Sullivan faced 18 shots
while Parkhill goalie
Steve Schepers faced 23
shots.
Pleased with the win,
Friyia wished the goals
against wasn't so high.
"We seem to have mis-
placed our commitment
to defence," he said,
adding goalie Ryan
Sullivan came up with
some big early saves.
All 13 goals scored in
Exeter's 8-5 road loss to
Lambeth Sunday were
scored at one end of the
rink. Lambeth was up 5-0
after the it t. period, then
Exeter -1 ed all five of
their go in the first 12.
minutes of the second.
Lambeth scored three
unanswereU goals in the
third period including the
winner at 9:00 and the
last goal into an empty
net while shorthanded
with 1:51 left. •
Geoffrey scored two
goals for the Hawks and
added an assist. Ben
McCann scored Exeter's
first goal while short-
handed and notched two
assists. Jeffrey and Regier
scored Exeter's other
goals with other assists by
Pfaff, Corlett and Glover.
Exeter's last two goals
were scored on the pow-
erf5lay while Lambeth
scored one powerplay
goal and two while short-
handed. Exeter scored
their five second period
goals on just seven shots.
O11son faced 31 shots in
the Hawks net including
21 in the fust period.
"It was a heartbreaker,"
Friyia said of the loss
after coming back from a
5-0 deficit. •
He said his team had
plenty of opportunities in
the third but with near
misses and hit posts,
Exeter couldn't buy a
goal.
The win and two losses
brings Exeter's record to
13-11 and 26 points, good
for second place in the
Morenz Division behl d
the first place Irish who
are at 16-6 and 32 points.
The Hawks recently
traded defenceman Chris
Chatterson, 20, of London
to Lambeth for a player to
be named later. Another
popular player, London's
Jason Mandarelli, has
chosen to play high school
hockey with St. Thomas

tinas.
atterson's and
Mandarelli's absences
leave room for any play-
ers left over after the
Goderich Jr. C club folded
earlier this season. Exeter
has already picked up
Bayfield's Craig Miller,
19, from that team. Miller
played in the Nov. 28
game versus Port Stanley
but sprained his knee.
He'll be back this week.
Friyia explained while
the Hawks are still in
rebuilding mode, it's best
to have younger players
who will have at least a
couple more years in the
league before becoming
overage. •
Miller has two to three
more years of junior
hockey while Chatterson
was facing exiting junior
hockey at the end of this
season since the Hawks
have four other 20 -year-
olds who will vye for the
single overage spot next
season. Those players are
captain Farquhar, Glover,
McCann and Geoff Maver.
Chatterson will get the
rest of the year with
Lambeth and likely could
win the overage spot
there since the team has
no other 20 -year-olds.
Friyia added he traded
Chatterson to a team that
has a better record than
the Hawks.
1 (traded Chatterson)
because I like him," Friyia
said. "That was in the
absolute best interest of
the Hawks and the
absolute best interest of
Chris Chatterson. He now
has one and a half years
of junior hockey, instead
of just a year."
Other recent zdditions
to the Hawks is local
defensemen Jon Keys
who's back after playing
last year with St. Marys
Jr. B and Geoff Maver
who's back Dec. 15.
With eight defensemen,
Friyia said something had
to give and teams usually
side with local talent.
This week the Hawks
will host Mitchell Friday
at South Huron Rec
Centre starting at 8:30
p.m. The game will have
a special twist since it
marks the annual Teddy
Bear Toss.
Fans are encouraged to
bring new stuffed animals
and toss them onto the ice
during the second inter-
mission. The teddies are
destined for the
Christmas Bureau who
will give them to needy
children. The Hawks also
host Mount Brydges on
Sunday (same time).
The Irish started the
week with a 5-2 home
win over Port Stanley on
Dec. 1.
Captain Chad Greenlee
led the way with two
goals in the third period
including the winning
marker at 12:23 from
Dunbar and Moriarity.
Greenlee's second goal,
scored unassisted while
shorthanded, came with
2:23 left in the game.
Keating scored an
empty net goal from
Wheatley and Dunbar
with 14 seconds left in the
game.
Smith scored Lucan's
firstgoal at 11:24 of the
first. The Lakers tied it up
18 seconds later.
Wheatley scored the
only goal of the second
period from Keating and
Ed Etheridge at 10:24.
Port Stanley tied the
game at 2-2 2:59 into the
third period before Lucan
scored three unanswered
goals for the win.
On Sunday the Irish
beat host Belmont 5-4.
"That was a pretty ugly
win but we got her,"
Bourne said, adding he
had a short bench with
five regulars out.
With his team clicking
for a four game winning
streak, Bourne said
there's not much more he
can do.
"I'm adjusting very well
to my team's systems," he
joked turning around the
often used coach's saying.
"I just let them play.
We're grinding pretty
good right now."
The Irish host Lambeth
tonight at 8:15 p.m. and
head to Seaforth Friday.
