Panther boys hockey begins 2-0

net for the Panthers.
South Huron coach Mike
Soldan said the school
was "buzzing" about the
game in the morning.
Shortly after the puck was
dropped a huge crowd,
including students, par-
ents and townsfolk. were
in the stands.
Students had the oppor-
tunity to 'buy' their way
out of school for the after-
noon to watch the game
by putting together an
Operation Christmas
Child care package des-
tined to a child in Central
America. At the game 369
packages was the
announced figure but a
few more dribbled in to
make the total 377 by
Monday.
With student council
decorating the arena for
the game with booster
signs and supplying
music, the game became
"a spirit raising event" for
the school, Soldan said.
"Friday was a tremen-
dous day in that the spirit
of the school reached a
fever peak," Soldan said.
"It was an electrifying
and emotional game and
fans will be sure to come
out for more."
Assistant coach Matt
Flynn agreed with
Soldan's take on school
spirit associated with the
game.
"The energy in the
school today was palpa-
ble," he said.
The Panther boys
opened the season Nov.
10 with a convincing 11-4
win at Stratford Central.
The line of J.R. Davies,
Martin and Dan
Mosurinjohn produced
five of the Panther goals.
The Panthers moved the
puck quickly and cycled it
into the Stratford end well
while Brad MacDonald
put in a strong effort
between the pipes for
South Huron.
The Panthers built a 4-0
lead in the first period
starting with an unassist-
ed goal by Overholt fol-
lowed by goals from Rob
Devries (assisted by
Mayers), Mosurinjohn
(Martin) and Martin
(Rasenberg). Stratford
managed to scratch out a
single goal in the first.
The Panthers outscored
Stratford 4-2 in the sec-
ond period. Seip led the
attack with two goals (the
first unassisted, the sec-
ond from Nick Haberer,
Mayers) while Martin
scored his second (unas-
sisted) and Scott Keys
notched his first goal of
the year (Mayers, Seip).
Stratford struck fust in
the third period but then
Musser turned things
around with a goal
(Overholt, Ryan Groot)
followed by two goals
from Davies (the first
unassisted, the second
from Rasenberg).
The win wasn't as easy
as it looks on paper with
the Central Rams moving
the puck well in their
building. Soldan said the
Panther defence and
goaltending along with
their speed were key fac-
tors in the victory.
The Panthers lapsed
defensively late in the sec-
ond period and had to be
reminded to take care of
the defensive zone. South
Huron came out for the
third peri Kc 1. more disci-
plined team.
Soldan is pleased with
the victories and foresees
great things for his team.
"The victories are
important to the Panther
squad," he said. "They
legitimize the resurgence
of the hockey program, a
decision by principal Deb
Homuth and athletic head
Terry O'Rourke. For the
school it is another oppor-
tunity for students to
bond to education
through sport."
