The Exeter Jr. D Hawks finished its most ambi- tious road trip winning as many games as they lost. The six road games over 10 nights trip wound up a wash for the Hawks as they went 3-3. Hawks coach Andy Friyia was shooting for seven points over the road trip and the team came up just a point short of a lofty goal. The Hawks started the week with a thrilling tilt verus Hwy. 4 rivals, the Lucan Irish, on Nov. 10. The game ended up clos- er than even the 4-3 score indicates. The Irish were up 2-0 after the first two minutes of the game, the first goal just 40 seconds in scored by Jason Amey from Ed Etheridge and Scott Phillips, the second by Ryan Keating from Darrell Parsons and Mike Burns. Exeter got one back 29 second later when Dave Farquhar scored an unas- sisted goal. The Hawks tied the game while shorthanded in the second period on an unassisted goal by Jeff Glover. Lucan got the upper hand again 7:33 into the third period when Kevin Dunbar put one behind Hawks goaltender Ryan 011son from Roy Davis and Amey. The Irish expanded on their lead by scoring less than two minutes later on the pow- erplay, the goal going to Keating from Corey Smith and goaltender Marc Williams • The Hawks refused to 'throw in the towel. With 1:10 left in the game and while on the powerplay, Exeter executed a set play - that resulted in Ben McCann scoring from Jaakko Heikkinen and Jeremy Geoffrey to make it 4-3. Exeter pressured Lucan throughout the final minute of play and were rewarded when Irish defenceman Corey Smith was called for delay of game it front of the net with just less than four seconds left. Irish coach Bill Bourne agreed with Friyia but disputed the penalty shot call. "We were told after- wards it was the wrong call," he said. Bourne was happy with his team's effort as well. "We played with control over and emotion for the most -part,". he said. • , The Hawksnext trav- elled to Mitchell Nov. 12 for what can be called less than a stellar effort from both sides. Exeter ended up winning 9-8. Jarrett Jeffrey led the Hawks attack with two goals and an assist. Other goals were scored by Farquhar, Jeremy Vanbergen, Jason Grenier, Heikkinen, Shawn Stuckless, Jon Miller and Geoffrey with assists earned by Geoffrey (2), McCann (2), Glover (2), Tyler McTavish (3), Heikkinen, Grenier (2), Jeffrey, Vanbergen, Farquhar and Jared Bourne. The score was 4-3 for Mitchell after the first period and 5-4 for Mitchell after the second. 011son faced 45 shots compared with the 37 shots Hawks snipers fired at Mitchell goalie Eric Scott. "I didn't enjoy being on the winning end of that game," Friyia said, under- lining that defence is "a big part of my philoso- phy" that wasn't observed by either team. Exeter then headed to Mount Brydges Nov. 13 where a second period lapse resulted in a 7-3 loss. The Bulldogs scored six goads in the second period, five of them in a five minute stretch near the end of the frame. Laura -Noakes and her partner, Jacobus Oud of the St. Thomas Figure Skating Club, finished third in juvenile pairs. • The performance earns them a posi- tion on the Select Team, team coats and a three to four day training camp. The pair are coached by John Bauman and Joanne Hellems. Harmonie Wong of the Lucan Figure Skating Club finished ninth in the junior ladies division at the same com- petition.
