The Exeter Jr. D Hawks
finished its most ambi-
tious road trip winning as
many games as they lost.
The six road games over
10 nights trip wound up a
wash for the Hawks as
they went 3-3. Hawks
coach Andy Friyia was
shooting for seven points
over the road trip and the
team came up just a point
short of a lofty goal.
The Hawks started the
week with a thrilling tilt
verus Hwy. 4 rivals, the
Lucan Irish, on Nov. 10.
The game ended up clos-
er than even the 4-3 score
indicates.
The Irish were up 2-0
after the first two minutes
of the game, the first goal
just 40 seconds in scored
by Jason Amey from Ed
Etheridge and Scott
Phillips, the second by
Ryan Keating from
Darrell Parsons and Mike
Burns.
Exeter got one back 29
second later when Dave
Farquhar scored an unas-
sisted goal.
The Hawks tied the
game while shorthanded
in the second period on
an unassisted goal by Jeff
Glover.
Lucan got the upper
hand again 7:33 into the
third period when Kevin
Dunbar put one behind
Hawks goaltender Ryan
011son from Roy Davis
and Amey. The Irish
expanded on their lead by
scoring less than two
minutes later on the pow-
erplay, the goal going to
Keating from Corey Smith
and goaltender Marc
Williams
• The Hawks refused to
'throw in the towel. With
1:10 left in the game and
while on the powerplay,
Exeter executed a set play -
that resulted in Ben
McCann scoring from
Jaakko Heikkinen and
Jeremy Geoffrey to make
it 4-3.
Exeter pressured Lucan
throughout the final
minute of play and were
rewarded when Irish
defenceman Corey Smith
was called for delay of
game it front of the net
with just less than four
seconds left. First handed
a two minute minor, the
officials changed their
minds and gave the
Hawks a penalty shot.
Hawks captain Dave
Farquhar got the call but
ended up having the puck
slide off his stick directly
in front of Williams
The shots on goal were
35-32 for Lucan.
The Hawks lost fireplug
Jason Mandarelli for a
couple games due to a
gross misconduct match
penalty handed to him
four seconds before
Exeter scored their last
goal.
Despite losing, Friyia
was Released with the
effort his team put out.
"That was a great hock-
ey game, just fantastic,"
he said.
Irish coach Bill Bourne
agreed with Friyia but
disputed the penalty shot
call.
"We were told after-
wards it was the wrong
call," he said.
Bourne was happy with
his team's effort as well.
"We played with control
over
and emotion for the most
-part,". he said. • ,
The Hawksnext trav-
elled to Mitchell Nov. 12
for what can be called
less than a stellar effort
from both sides. Exeter
ended up winning 9-8.
Jarrett Jeffrey led the
Hawks attack with two
goals and an assist. Other
goals were scored by
Farquhar, Jeremy
Vanbergen, Jason
Grenier, Heikkinen,
Shawn Stuckless, Jon
Miller and Geoffrey with
assists earned by Geoffrey
(2), McCann (2), Glover
(2), Tyler McTavish (3),
Heikkinen, Grenier (2),
Jeffrey, Vanbergen,
Farquhar and Jared
Bourne.
The score was 4-3 for
Mitchell after the first
period and 5-4 for
Mitchell after the second.
011son faced 45 shots
compared with the 37
shots Hawks snipers fired
at Mitchell goalie Eric
Scott.
"I didn't enjoy being on
the winning end of that
game," Friyia said, under-
lining that defence is "a
big part of my philoso-
phy" that wasn't observed
by either team.
Exeter then headed to
Mount Brydges Nov. 13
where a second period
lapse resulted in a 7-3
loss. The Bulldogs scored
six goads in the second
period, five of them in a
five minute stretch near
the end of the frame.
Scoring Exeter's goals
were Grenier (PP, from
Jeffrey, McCann),
Geoffrey (PP, from
Heikkinen, McCann) and
