The South Huron District High School midget boys volleyball team ended their'year on a victorious note by win- ning the Huron -Perth title last week at home. - In pool play, South Huron defeated St. Anne's (25-22, 25-17), Stratford Northwestern (25-13, 25- 15) and Seaforth two straight but lost soundly against a strong Stratford Central team. Ending the day in sec- ond place in their pool, the Panthers played first place team Listowel in the semi-final match. The South Huron squad came out flying during this match, playing smart and tough volleyball. The Panthers beat their opponents two straight by scores 25-5 and 25-16. Jake Romphf and Justin Hayter had key hits throughout the game while . Ryan Knee was the star server for the team. In the final match, South Huron met Stratford Central. This game was a see -saw game with Stratford win- ning the first game 25-21. Jesse McCann played a strong defensive game. passing the ball nicely to setters Knee and Wes Johnson. Entering the second game, two fresh players entered the game which helped to set the pace for the win. With the absence of starter Justin Hayter (due to other commitments), Jeff Beauchamp filled the spot superbly keeping his. team focused and opti- mistic. South Huron was on the losing side until a 19-18 score, when they took the lead and won the game 25-20. Setter Everette Dionne was a key blocker during the game and helped tip the scales with his hard but precise ser e. Chad Smith and Romphf layed tough even with injuries. In the final game, South Huron started out allow- ing Stratford to take a quick lead. With the score 4-2 for Stratford, the Panthers came alive and never looked back eventually winning 15-10. Covering each other on the court and placing some strategic balls made all the difference for the local squad. Knee and Dionne set up some nice balls, while hitters McCann, Smith, Beauchamp and Romphf used these_ sets to their advantage. "It was a real enjoyment to coach the boys this year," coach Deb Lord said. "A large nucleus of the team remained focused throughout the whole day which led to the win. The boys should be very proud of their accomplishment!" The South Huron midgets have won the Huron -Perth title for the second straight year.
