Saw Palmetto has been used to treat BPH
(benign prostatic hyperplasia) for years. The lat-
est herb to be used for this problem is Pygeum
africanum, also called the African plum tree. The bark contains
compounds that seem to have anti -androgenic and anti-inflam-
matory effects to reduce the size of the prostate gland. it has
been used quite commonly in France.
We've mentioned RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome) in this col-
umn before. Now there's a website on this topic containing
some good information about this frustrating condition. The
site address is: www.rls.org Give it a try.
Estrogen hormone supplements are used to prevent osteo-
porosis ;in women. Some women are concerned that this may
increase their risk of breast cancer. However, a recent Targe
American study of 37,000 women showed no overall increase
In the risk. The benefits of estrogen therapy outweigh any risk.
How much Vitamin E is too much? Doses of Vitamin E above
1600 units can increase the risk of bleeding. Those on antico-
agulant therapy should be cautious. More common doses are.
400 to 800 units per day. There is good evidence that Vitamin
E slows the progression of heart disease and is often recom-
mended by cardiologists for heart patients.
