Senior, junior v ball seasons over, midgets host H -P tourney GODERICH - The South Huron District High School senior and junior boys volleyball seasons came to an abrupt end in Goderich last week. The seniors lost their Huron semi-final match to Wingham F.E. Madill in three straight games. The first was a 24-26 heart- breaker. Coach Phil Conley said his boys lost some of their steam in the last two games to fall 14- 25 and 13-25. "It was a good team effort," Conley said, adding Aran Beattie played well and had some of the best hits while Ben Forrest had some great blocks. "The Panthers had good season for the young team they were," Conley said. "It was a building year with a lot of Gr. 11s. Everyone's back next sea- son." The junior Panthers came close to knocking off their semi-final oppo- nent, host Goderich, but came up short in the final game. The scores were 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 25- 23 and 4-15. They may not have won many games, but the seniors played well enough to impress Conley during the Stratford St. Mike's tournament on Oct. 30. The Panthers lost five games and won one dur- ing pool play, the win over Medway 25-23. SHDHS fell to St. Thomas Arthur Voaden two games to one in the consolation semi-final. The first game was the 25-22 win with game two 15-25 and game three 16- 17. Conley lauded Lance Pfaff for outstanding digs and Brayden Lord for excellent kills. The Panther midgets won the Huron league with a spotless record and had a good chance to repeat as Huron -Perth champions at the final tournament they hosted yesterday after press. (photo/jeanna Hern,Amber Lord, Laura Rollings and Erin Bowers) Panther jr. girls b -ball grab first place WINGHAM - The South Huron District High School junior girls basketball team showed they had the makings for a first place team with a 39-10 drubbing of host Wingham F.E. Madill. The Panthers played an aggressive game and were up 18-0 after the first quarter. Danielle Knip led the scoring with eight points and each team member scored. The win puts the junior Panthers in first place in Huron with an 8-1 record. The seniors played a superb game versus Madill but wound up on the wrong end of a 36- 30 score: Jessica Davies scored 13 points and Marilou . Horn added nine. The Panthers play their last regular season game at Clinton St. Anne's on Nov. 10. If the juniors win, they will own first place by them- selves and if they lose they will share the top ranking. Win or lose, the juniors will host a Huron semi-final game on Nov. 12. • The seniors will either play at Madill or Goderich in their semi- final also on Nov. 12. The seniors competed in a tournament in Blenheim and Chatham on the weekend. The Panthers lost all three games, the first 69-21 to Amherstburg's General Amherst, the second 60- 16 to Chatham Collegiate and the final game 51- 32 to Blenheim. Coach Terry O'Rourke said it was difficult to. compete against the competition since each adversary featured at least two girls over six feet tall.. Despite the losses, O'Rourke said his team put forth an excel- lent effort with Hern being named to the tour- nament all-star team. Jamie Reaburn, Krista Tuininga, Dana Thiel, Meaghan O'Rourke, Sherri Leveck, Alaina Hern and Martina Gaebler also played well. The juniors travelled to lor Parkhill for a tourna- ment on the weekend. The Panthers lost their first game to St. Thomas St. Joe's 55-45. Coach Nicole. Kovats said her team kept it close the mit:.7' whole game but were unable to contain St. Joe's shooting. The Panthers won• their next game versus Woodstock St. Marys 45,- 40 thanks to a second half surge by Jillian • Jones. South Huron then met London Laurier in the consolation final. The Panthers led the entire way thanks to excellent defensive efforts by Allison Hayward and..,., -,y Amanda Wuerth and offensive scoring by Nikki Cyr and Jones. After shaky foul shooting and a tense last few minutes South Huron came away with a 40-37 win. Wuerth led Panther shooting with 12 points with Cyr adding 10. Jones was named the tournament MVP with her 56 total points.
