EXETER — The Exeter Juvenile
Chiefs found themselves on top of
the world one night and at the bot-
tom of the hill the next during
weekend action at South Huron Rec
Centre. •
On Friday the Chiefs blasted
Langton 6-0 with Exeter goalie
t?imBrad McDonald earning the
shutout.
Langton showed up in Exeter with
only 12 players while Exeter had a
full bench.
Scott Keys was on fire for the
Chiefs scoring a hat -trick, all three
goals coming in the first period.
Chad Monteith, Shawn Stuckless
and Michael Wilhelm also scored
for Exeter with assists going to
Ryan Carroll (2), Tyler Taylor, Greg
Hendricks (2) and Andrew Maver.
On Saturday Exeter fell to Acton
5-2. Acton led 4-1 into the last five
minutes of the third and held on for
.the win. ,The score was 2-0 for
Acton after the first period and 2-1
after the second period.
Scoring for the Chiefs were Keys
from Monteith and Matt Regier and
.Monteith from Steven Rasenberg
and Stuckless.
Chiefs manager John Rasenberg
said the team is steadily improving
adding this year's edition is shaping
up to be better than last year's.
"We're looking better," he said.
"It shows promise."
Exeter's record stands at 2-3-1
(wins, losses, ties).
The Chiefs have two week off
before travelling to Six Nations on
Nov. 20.

THAMESFORD — The
Exeter Jr. D Hawks may
have gone 1-1 on the
weekend but came out as
the overall winners.
The Hawks lost 4-3 at
Thamesford Sunday night
but the score could have
been reversed if not for a
disallowed goal late in the
third period. Jeremy
Geoffrey battled in the
corner for the puck and
passed it out to the stick of
Jason Grenier who stuffed
it into the top half of the
net to make the score 4-3
for Exeter. The bad news
is that referee Mike Logan
had his arm up and blew
the whistle after the puck
was in the net since there
was a delayed penalty to
Geoffrey. The Trojans
later scored on the result-
ing powerplay.
"There's the difference
in the game right there,"
Hawks coach Andy Friyia
said.
Thamesford built a 3-0
lead till Exeter got on the
board with 6:22 left fn the
second period. Jarrett
Jeffrey notched the goal
from Geoffrey.
The Hawks then scored
two powerplay goals in
less than a minute early in
the third period. Jaakko
Heikinnen scored the first
goal from Jeffrey and
Geoffrey and then Jeffrey
scored his second of the
night from Heil Innen and
Geoffrey.
The game was marred
by Thamesford's chippy
play that resulted in 16
Exeter powerplays while
Exeter had to kill off six
shorthanded situations.
Several of Exeter's power -
plays were. two-man
advantages allowing them
to tie the game.
Thamesford racked up 721
penalty minutes While
Exeter had 22 minutes in
the box (though the
Trojans scored their last
two goals on the PP).
Exeter's Jon Miller will
have to sit out at least a
few weeks with a broken
hand that occurred after a
vicious slash from a
Trojan player.
"I'm under the impres-
sion Jr. D hockey has
cleaned itself up," Friyia
said. "Someone should tell
Thamesford that."
Ryan 011son faced 38
shots between the pipes
for Exeter while the
Hawks threw 27 shots at ,
the Thamesford goal -
tender.
The Hawks started the
weekend with a 9-3 win
over host Seaforth on
Friday. Exeter goaltender
Ryan Sullivan faced 41
shots and stood on his
head for much of the
game.
"Sulli played fantastic,"
Friyia said. "He made
some highlight reel saves
early on."
The other r story of the
game was the JJG connec-•
tion of Geoffrey and
Jeffrey who combined for
nine points on the night.
Geoffrey had five points
(two goals, three assists)
while Jeffrey notched four
points (two goals, two
assists).
Friyia said Jeffrey may
have outscored his line -
mate if he hadn't left litter
the second period due to a
sore back.
Their other linemate,
Jason Grenier, notched a
goal.and two. assists,
Other galls were scored
by Dave Farquhar (from
Jason Mandarelli), Nick
Regier (a pair, the first
unassisted, the second
from Mandarelli) and Jeff
Glover (from Tim Maver).
Other assists went to Chris
Chatterson and Jeremy
Vanbergen.
The Hawks are still hurt-
ing: Shawn Sherwood is
out a few more weeks
with a broken collar bone
and Greg Pilling is out till
January with a broken
ankle. The much antici-
pated return of tough for-
ward Geoff Maver is slated
for Dec. 15.
Last week's win and a
loss puts Exeter's record
at 7-7, still good for sec-
ond place behind the
Lucan Irish. The two
teams will meet in Lucan
tonight (Nov. 10) at 8:15
p.m. The Hawks continue
their six game road trip
with a tilt at Mitchell on
Nov.. 11, a visit to Mount
Brydges Nov. 13 and final-
ly a trip to Belmont on
Nov. 14.

Irish continue their roll
By .Craig Bradford
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN --- The Lucan Jr.
D Irish are feeling a little
lucky after surpassing
their goal for last week.
Coach Bill Bourne said
the aim was to wia two
out of three games last
week. The team ended up
winning all three of its
games: 5-4 over Mitchell
at home on Nov. 3, 5-2
over host Port Stanley on
Friday and 6-3 in
Lambeth Sunday.
Bourne said Irish goal -
tender Jon Wickens put
on a clinic versus Port.
"Mr. Wickens was phe-
nomenal in Port," he said.
"He must of faced 50
shots including 10 big
time saves."
Lucan built a 5-0 lead
over the Lakers including
two goals in the first
minute of play.
"It made my debut (as
head and sole coach) a lit-
tle less shaky," Bourne
said (for a related story
on former Irish coach
Jason Bukala's gradua-
tion to St. Marys Jr. B, see
elsewhere in Sports).
In the Mitchell game,
the Irish had to hang on
to ward off the surging
Hawks. Mitchell scored
the only goal of the first
period only 37 seconds
into the game.
Lucan copied the feat by
scoring 37 seconds into
the second period. Scott
Wheatley scored the goal
from Ryan Keating and
Corey Smith.
The Irish then scored
two quick goals within a
minute and a half, the
first shorthanded and
unassisted by Kevin
Dunbar and the second,
again unassisted, by Matt
Thompson.
Mitchell evened the
score by ._ raring two goals
in the las ' minutes of
the pc
Ed Et dge put Lucan
up by one by scoring 8:58
into the third period from
Matt Thompson and
Adam Thompson. Adam
Thompson notched an
unassisted goal with 8:33
left in the game to give
the Irish some insurance.
It turned out the Irish
needed the insurance
because Mitchell scored
with 1:21 left to make it
close.
After some injury prob-
lems, the Irish are now
healthy and are at full;
strength especially with
Greg Henderson back in
the lineup after his duties
with the University of
Western Ontario
Mustangs football team
are over. Andrew
Moriarity is also back
after the UWO rugby
team won the provincial
championship. One half of
last year's goaltending
duo, Marc Williams, is
back after a stint with the
