No smoking good
for Huron eateries
HURON COUNTY — Huron County smokers have
been dealt another blow when it comes to enjoying
their habit in public.
A smoking survey of restaurants in the county has
found restricting smoking can increase business. The
survey report was included in the Huron County coun-
cil agenda for last week's meeting.
Eighty-four restaurants responded to the survey out
of 105 surveys distributed for an 80 per cent response
rate. The survey asked restaurant operators whether
business was better, the same or worse after restrict-
ing smoking.
The survey found restaurants with more than 75 per
centsmoke-free seating were 1.6 times more likely to
report ..an increase in business than restaurants with
less smoke-free seating.
The survey also found entirely smoke-free restau-
rants or restaurantswith a completely enclosed smok-
ing area were three times more likely to .report an
increase. in business.
Exeter Reeve Roy Triebner said the survey will be
used to encourage restaurants to be smoke-free, to
install smoke-free sections or increase smoke-free
seating.
The survey will be presented to the Ontario Public
Health Association Conference in Toronto Nov. 15.

Volunteer tutors needed
for literacy/numeracy
project
EXETER -- The
Literacy/Numeracy
Project of Huron County
wants. you.
The project, committed
to increasing the reading,
writing and math skills of
adults and children in the
county needs volunteers
to work as one-to-one
tutors. .` .
Funded :by the Avon
Maitland District School
Board and Human
Resources Development
Canada, the project will
train potential tutors.
Student/tutor matches
are based on compatible
personality types and
location and result in con-
fidential instruction in
reading, writing and
numeracy.
Hours and location of
study are flexible and
permit students of all
ages to progress at their
own pace. An extensive
lending library and struc-
tured teacher/tutor manu-
als and student skill
books, optional
training/workshops and
the support of coordina-
tors are beneficial for
tutors.
There are never as
many volunteer tutors as
there are people in need.
There are now over 100
adults and children in
Huron County being
tutored by volunteers,.liut
there are at least that
many on a waiting list.
No teaching nor =ozing
experience is necessary. If
interested call Ann
Heeney or Heather
Robinet at 482-7948.
