Lucan's Ausable Centre still
waiting for a new home
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN BIDDULPH —
The future of the
former Village of Lucan
office on Main Street is
still unknown.
While the Township of
Lucan Biddulph has
offered the building to
the Ausable Centre for
$1/year for five years,
the centre has delayed
an answer. The building
needs extensive
renovations, • _ which
would be at the Ausable
Centre's cost.
As previously reported
in the T -A, the building
needy to be gutted, re-
wired and made
wheelchair accessible to
meet the Ausable
Centre's requirements.
Council agreed ., at its
Oct. 19 meeting to meet
with the Ausable Centre,
members _ of Human
Resources, Department.
Canada and ' perhaps
Perth -Middlesex MP
John Richardson to
discuss the Ausable
Centre's options.
As township
administrator Ron
Reymer told the T -A,
one option is for the
Ausable Centre to move
into the basement of the
new library being added
onto the Lucan
Community Memorial
Centre.
But council is growing
impatient at the centre,
with councilors Glenn
Silver and Leroy Maguire
saying the township
should sell the former
village office instead of
leasing to the Ausable
Centre. Before the
Ausable Centre
requested a lease for the
former village office in
the summer, council had
already agreed to sell .the
building.
Silver, -_ though,
wondered whether
deciding to not lease the
building to the centre
would negatively affect
funding the centre gets
from the Trillium
Foundation. Maguire also
asked if there were other
ways council could help
the centre without
leasing the former village
office.
At its next meeting,
Nov. 2, Coun. Paul Wallis
said he wants concrete
suggestions and plans
from the Ausable Centre
on where it wants to
move.
Also from council's Oct.
19 meeting:
Selling old
equipment
Council agreed to sell
its old playground
equipment from Market
Street Park to a township
resident for $200.
The township recently
bought new equipment
for the park because the
old equipment doesn't
meet safety standards.
Reymer suggested
council scrap the
equipmentaind send it to
a recycling plant because
he fears a child getting
hurt if the equipment is
still used.
"I don't want that on
my conscience if some
kid gets hurt," for $200,
Reymer said to council.
Coun. Harry Wraith,
though, said the
township should sell the
equipment and sign a
release, absolving itself
of any liability.
The township also
agreed to offer the First
World War cannon from
Market Street Park to
the Legion because it has
also been deemed unsafe
for the park.
