Jr. D Irish celebrate banner unveiling with two wins By Craig Bradford TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN — The Lucan Jr. D Irish must have been inspired by the pre -game ceremonies before their home opener versus Parkhill North Middlesex. Before the game, the Irish players who played last season on the, all - Ontario champions were on hand for the handing over of the championship banner by Jr. D league chairperson Karen Phibbs. Former captain Mike Jaremchenko, former assistant captains Greg Henderson and Mark Phillips and this year's captain, Chad Greenlee. accepted the banner. Last season's players also were given their championship rings. Lucan then went on to nail the Stars 7-3. Lucan scored five goals in the first period, the first four of them on the powerplay, while' North Middlesex managed to get two goals by Irish goal - tender Jon Wickens. Kevin Dunbar scored Lucan's first goal 2:33 into the first from Greenlee. Greenlee made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal at 7:01. Scott Wheatley made it 3-0 a scant 41 seconds later from Roy Davis. The Stars got one back at 8:23 but Ben Dobbie restored Lucan's three goal lead at 12:52 from Greenlee and Dunbar. North Middlesex scored their own powerplay goal at 15:19 but the Irish restored their three -goal cushion when Greenlee scored an even strength marker from Dobbie and Dunbar at 16:37. Ryan Keating scored Lucan's last goal at 16:31 of the third period. The Irish threw 32 shots at Stars goaltender Ben Yormack while Wickens faced 17 shots. At Seaforth on Friday, Irish rookie goaltender (and local minor hockey product) Mike Harding almost notched his first shutout in his first start with the club in a 3-1 win. Lucan's powerplay was hot again providing their last two goals. Dunbar got the Irish ball rolling 3:52 into the first period with assists going to Greenlee and Smith. Matt Porter put the Irish up 2-0 on the powerplay 7:00 into the second peri- od from Keating and Thompson. Dunbar notched Lucan's extra insurance goal with 3:37 left in the second from Dobbie. Seaforth scored mid- way through the third period on the powerplay to make things more interesting and spoil Harding's shutout bid. Lucan co -coach Bill Bourne said Seaforth goalie Marty Frayne kept his team in the game.
