By Kate Monk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF DASHWOOD - One day was not enough to see all the International Plowing Match had to offer. Organizers prided themselves in having something of interest for people of all ages and backgrounds. Plowing has always been the cornerstone of the IPM with several championships on the line. The VIP plow- ing had everyone from members of parliament and local government to the media and OPP officers. Katie Dickieson of Wellington County was crowned Queen of the Furrow at last Thursday's banquet in Exeter. Huron's queen, Erin McNaughton of Kippen, made her county proud as one of the finalists. The Family Lifestyles area was a key component of the IPM. The fashion tent featured fashion shows and information sessions. Food and recipe ideas were on stage at the Heaping Helping of Huron tent. The quilting tent was one of the most popular areas of interest with an array of prize-winning quilts on dis- play. The display is a follow-up to a successftil quilt show and competition in Exeter in April. Frieda Hayter of Dashwood won the IPM '99 quilt, Nancy Tellier of Cambridge won the second prize quilt and Cheryl Varey of Milverton won the third prize quilt. Crafters Core was home to about 70 vendors with crafts, sewing, pottery, jewelry and original art. Child care services at the Kid's Cottage allowed par- ents to see the match child• for a few hours. Antique farm equipment L overed 20 acres and included tractors, threshing machines and harvesting equipment of alt kinds. A tent included antique dis- plays and craft skills such as rug hooking. Entertainment on five stages throughout Tented City gave visitors a chance to sit down and enjoy the best entertainment Huron has to offer. The talent included singers, dancers and actors from all corners of the county. The 1PM also showcased livestock and horses from the county as well as border collie demonstrations, lla- mas exhibits and cattle penning. IPM '99 established what will hopefully be a long- term partnership with Horseshoe Ontario with a sanc- tioned horseshoe pitching competition throughout the week. Saturday, tug of war teams from Ontario and the U.S. competed. The Huron Sunset Trailer Park, adjacent to Tented City, had nearly 1,400 serviced and unserviced camp- sites on 100 acres of farm land. Campers came from across Canada as well as Michigan, new York, Vermont, New Jersey and Florida. Nightly entertain- ment, washrooms, showers, eating facilities and a store were all within the trailer park. The 210 -acre Machines in Motion exhibit took a com- prehensive look at progress in farming over the last See PLOWING MATCH on page 19 Surprise! Katie Dickieson of Wellington County, centre, appears shocked as she was announced Queen of the Furrow for 1999-2000 at last week's banquet in Exeter. Sharing the sur- prise with Dickieson are Huron County rept tentative Erin McNaughton, feft, and Lambton County contestant Amanda Racher. The smiles of_ IPM '99 Vice - Chairperson Leona Armstrong, Chairperson Graeme Craig and Recording Secretary Marie Hicknell during the closing parade reflect the positive attitude of organizers.
