Capsule Comments
with Ernie Miatello
Does drinking milk cause an increase in
mucus? Many people believe it doeS but
Australian researchers studied this in detail recently and found
that milk has no effect on mucus formation or mucus -related
respiratory tract symptoms.
• Another myth: "Grapefruit burns fat". Grapefruit is good for you
but eating vast amounts of it doesn't increase the rate at
which the body bums fat. The enzymes in grapefruit do not
digest calories faster either.
Drinking, alcohol and smoking tobacco are synergistic. This
means the negative effects of doing both are more than twice
that of doing ony one. An example is the risk of oral cancer is
4 times greater in a moderate smoker and drinker (less than 1
pack a day and one drink a day), than in a smoking teetotalar.
There's a new device coming on the market next year that will
make it easier for health professionals to locate a vein or
artery. Using infrared light, it will make the insertion of an IV or
finding a certain artery or vein for a blood sample quite easy. it
will be especially helpful In children and the elderly.
