The Panther girls won the Huron -Perth golf cham- pionship at Mitchell Golf and Country Club last week. Maggie Steciuk led the way for the Panthers and , was the tournament's to female with a 37 on the front nine. Only the best nine holes, either front or back, is used to determine the girls scores. "She really read the course well," Panther golf coach Casey Cook said. Brittany Caldwell was South Huron's next best girl golfer by notching a 49. Cari Mason and Jenna Snell rounded out the team by golfing a 56 and a 76 respectively. Cook said the competition was tight with one opponent coming to within one stroke of Steciuk. Unfortunately the Panther boys didn't fare as well. Mike Dietrich was South Huron's best boy with a 79 over 18 holes. Cam Murray and Matt Dietrich were next with an 80 and an 81 while James Mason was disqualified for picking up his ball. Mason's misfortune didn't count since the scores from the top three golfers from each team were used. Cook hopes to send the best three Panther golfers to the WOSSA tournament at Ingersoll Golf and Country Club on Oct. 1. McTavisij, a killer penalty killer. Both played for the Bantam. 'AAA' London Knights last season. Friyia said the goalie sit- uation should be ironed out by the weekend. The three goaltenders competing for the two jobs include Exeter's Ryan Sullivan (the past two season's third stringer), Dean Kluke (an Elgin -Middlesex 'AAA' product) and Damon O'Quinn, the latter two both of London. Friyia said he's building a team that will be suc- cessful over the long haul. "We'll have a young, competitive and exciting hockey club that will be competitive over the next three years without any changes," he said. The Hawks will feature lots of speed, size and toughness. One thing the Hawks will lack this year is experience. Friyia said the average ago of the team is in the 17.5-18 range and the team has no overagers. The lack of an Exeter Minor Hockey midget team has also complicat- ed things for Friyia. "It puts us in a toughsit- uation," he said, since without an affiliate there is no where to send midget age players when not needed and no where to find talent to fill the roster when there are injuries. Hawks G.M. Bill Brock said the team has applied to the Ontario Hockey League for Stephen Minor Hockey's midget team to serve as an affiliate. , - Stephen's midgets could get the nod only if Exeter Minor Hockey doesn't form .a juvenile; team. Exeter juvenile manager John Rasenberg assured the T -A there will be 'a juvenile team this season. But the juvies won't start practicing till Sept. 27 and the Hawks will begin their' regular season versus Thamesford at Hensall Arena on, Sept. 24 at8:30p.m; : . The Hawks will play three consecutive days this weekend with road games on Saturday at Port Stanley and. Sunday . at Parkhill/North Middlesex. In exhibition action* Sept. 15, ,the Hawks were beat8-2 at Lucan. • Exeter did better versus their Hwy. 4 rivals during the first game of last weekend's Thamesford pre -season tournament by beating them 5 2,Grenier scoring twice. The Hawks lost game two 6-0 to' Lambeth, slept 'by ,Belmont 2-1. (Grenier witthe winner) and got shellshocked by Thamesford 10-2 in their final game. Friyia said Exeter .did without sever- al of its veterans during the ,last three games of the tournament. Friyia said the Belmont win was field special sig- nificance . since the Bombers let him go last season. . "I asked them to do it for me and they did ,it for me," he said of the extra effort his. players showed to give him the win, Exeter played at Mitchell Monday night and won 5-0. Irish set to defend '98/99 all s ntario title By Craig Bradford TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF LUCAN -- This year's .Lucan Jr. D 'Irish have a tough act to follow. Last season's squad captured the Holy G► f Jr. D hockey, the all -Ontario championship, L. .ng their way through the regular season and p. _, offs. They ended up defeating the defending champs, the Wellesley Applejacks, in six games in the final series. Lucan also is the two-time defending Morenz Division regular season champion. Irish co -coach said regular 12 players from last year are returning as well as three more affiliated players. Returning players include overagers Kevin Dunbar (forward) and Jason Amey (defence). Amey is among five veteran - defenceman 'back with the Hawks . that include Corey Smith, Roy Davis, Chad Lambourn and Matt Porter. "We're pretty solid on defence," Bukala said. Back on offence are Adam Wagner, Scott Wheatley, Scott Phillips, Chad Greenlee, Greg Henderson and Ben Dobbie. Dobbie returns after spending some time with the St. Marys Jr. B Lincolns. Not returning are both of last year's goaltenders. Marc Williams has been picked up by the Strathroy Jr. B Rockets while Mike Boyce is now backstopping for St. Marys Jr. B. Also playing for the Lincolns are two integral cogs to last year's all -Ontario Irish team: for- ward Justin Mulligan and Derek Graan'sma. Bukala is grooming three new goalies: Granton's Mike Harding, Lucan's Joe Dibble (Ben's brother) and London's John Wickens who played high school hockey with Laurier last season. Ogler newcomers, include London midgets Ryan Keeling (centre), Nile Bums (forward) and Jason Kyle r (defence). Lucan's Matt 'Thompson and Adair Thompson along with Thorndale's Ryan McGuffin are back with the Irish after getting some ice time, last •season as affili- ates. EXETER -- Things are looking up for South Huron District High School's cross country program this season after the first meet at London Springbank. Coach Joe Fulop said things look promising with many returning veterans including four of last season's senior girls team that went to OFSAA. The senior girls are led by Erin Robilliard who was 18th at -Springbank. Crystalyn Cowell (56th) ran a strong first career race as well with 'Brenda Elford (61st) finishing closely behind. "The junior boys could be excellent," Fulop said. - .The midget boys have three strong runners in Skylar VanKristum (40th), Jared Easton (43rd) and Dan Spence (44th). Fulop said the three could be strong Huron - Perth contenders with a fourth runner. Midget girl Heather Morgan (37th) ran a decent first race through illness held her back. Fulop said she'll improve. Jenna Snell (51st) fin- ished strongly at Springbank with only a day of preparation. Brenna Osgood : ran well till forced to retire. The teams next travel ,to London's University of Western Ontario for a meet on Sept. 30:
