campaign, aimed at
addressing safety issues
to Canadian motorists.
Forty percent of all tray=
el occurs during the sum-
mer season from July • to
September, with more
motorists on the road in
August than any other
month of the year. There
are more than 700,000
trucks• travelling on inter-
city highways and on
average 612,000 truck
trips in a week on
Canada's major high-
ways.
In 1997, there were
3,064 fatalities and
221,186 injuries due to
collisions on Canadian
roads; 664 of the fatalities
4. involved commercial vehi-
cles. This represents a
decline in reported colli-
sions from the previous
year. The number of trac-
tor -trailers involved in
fatal collisions in 1996
was at the lowest level in
four years. Between 1995
and 1996, the number of
tractor -trailers involved
in fatal accidents dropped
by 15 percent.
"Traffic collisions are
not accidents. Most are
preventable and can be
avoided with common-
sense solutions," stated
CAA national president
Brian Hunt. "Part of dri-

als, developed in conjun-
ction with professional

designed to promote a
better understanding of
large vehicles and
increase the comfort level
and safety of motorists.
Highlights from the tips
for drivers include:
Remember, the bigger
the truck
• the larger their blind
spots;
• the longer it takes
them to stop;
• the more distance you
need to pass them;
• the more room they
need to manoeuvre.
