Men need to get the facts A Royal donation
about prostate cancer
STRATFORD - During Prostate Cancer
Awareness Week from Sept. 20-26, the Canadian
Cancer Society will urge men over 50 to get a
prostate exam.
"Men need to get the facts and talk to their doc-
tors about a prostate exam," says Ken Dale, Unit
President, Canadian Cancer Society. "It's simple
and it's important."
Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed
cancer for Canadian men. This year, an estimated
16600 men will be diagnosed with prostate can-
cer and. about 4,100 will die of the disease. One in
eight men will develop prostate cancer in his life-
time, most likely after age 70.
."Prostate Icer affects thousands of Canadian
men and their families," says Dave Broadfoot,
popular Canadian comedian and spokesman for
the Canadian Cancer Society. "Once you're over
50, you should talk to your doctor to find out more
about your prostate, prostate cancer: and early
detection tests. Call your doctor today - get
checked!"
The Canadian Cancer Society recommends men
over 50 discw-; the potential benefits and risks of
early detection testing using the prostate specific
antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam,
with their doctor. Men in high risk groups, such as
black men and those with a family history of
prostate cancer, should discuss the need for test-
ing at a younger age.
"Men should find out all4hey can about early
detection of prostate cancer," says Mr. Dale: "We
urge men to talk to their doctors about early
detection tests such as the digital rectal exam and
the PSA blood test."
To find out more about prostate cancer, early
detection and community resources, call the

If you are taking calcium supplements, divide
your daily dose into at least two portions. Your
body absorbs calcium better in smaller
amounts (500 mi or less). So take one tablet in the morning
and one at supper. Taking the dose with meals also enhances
absorption. ••

This is Arthritis Month and those new "cox -2 Inhibitors", a new
idea in arthritis drug treatment, appear to be bringing some
relief to arthritis sufferers. The older -style arthritis drugs are
effective but can cause gastrointestinal and kidney problems.
The cox -2 types have fewer problems in these areas but are as
effective.
Anal itching is not a life-threatening problem but can be very
annoying. It is easily treated with witch -hazel impregnated pads
("Tucks") and or an application of Hydrocortisone cream 0,496
which will bring instant relief. A

How fast do you walk for exercise? Count the steps you take in
one minute. Seventy steps equals about 2 mph, 105 steps is
3 mph, end 140 is 4 mph etc. That's based on a stride of 2.5
feet. For those with longer strides, count the number of steps
in one minute and divide by 30 to get your speed.
