Last hurrah for 'Bend By Craig Bradford TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND It's time to say goodbye to an old friend. The Grand Bend beach house that has served as change rooms, wash- rooms and a place to wet your whistle and fill your tummy will be torn down later this month so the new improved beach house can be erected for the Canada 2001 Summer. Games. The old beach house was built in the late '60s. Former Grand Bend Reeve Bob Sharen said the sewage system pump- ing station and the beach patrol room were added in '79/80. Other notable work done on the beach house was the removal of asbestos sheeting in the mid '80s. Sharen, village reeve for 14 years between '73-85 and '88-89, said some people will miss the old beach house, while others will like the new one and others will call the bigger facility "flamboyant." Grand Bend's Karen Robertson will be counted in both groups. She has worked at the beach house's concession stand, Jake's Place, for three years. "It's going to be real sad," Robertson said, adding "we're hoping" Jake's Place gets a chance to provide conces- sion services in the new beach house. Though sorry to see the current building go, Robertson said improve- ments are badly needed. "It's about time," she said: "We need decent bathrooms. There's not enough bathrooms for men or women. We also need (change room) doors that lock and showers that work." ch house The beach house is owned by the village and Jake's Place is contracted to operate and manage the building. The new. beach house, nicknamed 'The Wave', is scheduled to be ready for the 2000 beach season. The Wave will feature 24- hour washrooms, change rooms, showers, lockers and lifeguard facilities as well as a food concession stand. The Wave will also have upper and Iower observation decks, a 25 - foot tower and an eleva- tor. The Wave is just part of $250,000 worth of improvements :to the beach in preparation of the 2001 Games. The beach will also be spruced up with a 500 m boardwalk and about 70 more parking spots. Another $250,000 will be raised by the Grand Bend Friends of the Games for general opera- Wantedman caught during Grand Bend break-in attempt GRAND BEND -- A man who had escaped from a Toronto detention ,cen- tre and had been on the lamb all sum- mer `was caught by North Lambton OPP in the middle of a break-in at a Grand Bend business Aug. 31. North Lambton OPP Const. Don Shropshall said David James Moir, 32, is charged with two break and enters and having break-in instruments. Moir was to appear in Sarnia court Sept. 3 for a bail hearing. An officer on foot patrol in Grand Bend shortly after 3 a.m., Aug. 31, heard the sound of breaking glass in an alley next to Knockout Casual Wear on Main St. The officer was moving that way when he sawa man leaving the alley and walking across the street to Ripples Fashion. Moir was caught through a special surveillance break and enter squad set up by the North Lambton OPP to inves- tigate the large number of break-ins in the Grand Bend area recently.
