It will be a tough haul for the Gunners in the playoffs since the team will lose some players, including both goalkeepers, who are off to university or college. -: Gardner makes national women's hockey team By. Gardner, 21, was cho- sen 1br the team after the last selection process in iM ocitreal Aug. 17-22. It was unbelievable," Gardner said of how she felt after she was told she made the team. "I was crying with relief after all the hard work and train- ing„ The team travelled to Lake Placid, N.Y., right after the final selections for a three -game series versus Team USA under 22 from Aug. 25-28. Gardner was solid on the blueline during regu- lar shifts in all three games while also pitching in on powerplays and penalty kills. Team Canada won the series two games to one. The next step for Gardner in international hockey is to make Canada's senior team. She hopes to redeye a let- ter inviting her to the senior camp tryout as one of a handful of under 22 players that will round out the senior ros- ter. Gardner is starting her third year at Providence's Brown University on a four year hockey scholarship. She • is taking human biology and hopes for a career . in athletic therapy or coach- ing after graduation. The series versus Team USA was made more interesting for Gardner with three of her Brown Bear teammates, most notably Tara Mounsey (defence, '98 Nagano Olympics gold medal win- ner), suiting up, for the USA. Gardner is putting on another Brown uniform this year: she recently made the Ivey League school's field hockey team. Brown field hockey head coach Carolan Norris said she's impressed with Gardner's speed and with a little work on her stick skills (getting out of ice hockey mode) , Gardner has the potential to be a standout field hockey performer. - "She's very good," Norris .said. "She'll defi- nitely be a starter -and be •one of our better players." Gardner will play either left- wing or centre for- ward and Norris expects Cara Gardner A SPORTS DIVOTS her to be in on many of Brown's goals. The field hockey season starts on Sept. 11 and ends Nov. 6. Norris said the field hockey and ice hockey seasons only over- lap for a week so Gardner is expected to fit in most if not all of the field hockey season. - There's one big differ- ence between U.S. field hockey and the Canadian sport: many U.S. colleges (including Brown) play on artificial turf which Is much faster than natural grass. ' Gardner paved the way to U.S.. college success with a stellar career at South Huron District High School, the: London Devilettes hockey system and Exeter Area Ringette. She won SHDHS's female athlete of the year four times, was a member of three OFSAA winning field hockey .teams, played . for the Team Ontario ringette squad that won the '96 national' field hockey title and Ike GARDNER page 23 Hardyaces fourth at Ironwood EXE•i ER — Lucas's Ken Hardy marked a first in his go Greer Aug. 24. Hardy stroked a hole -in -one at Ironwood Golf Club on the fourth hole. He used a 6 -iron for the 167 yard shot. The feat was witnessed by Brian Monroe, Arden Shantz and Ed Cosman. -• • Stratford's Rodney Leis aced the 13th hole at Ironwood on Aug. 26. He used his pitching wedge to sink the 108 yard shot from the white tees. The feat was witnessed by Lori Kush and Mike Nagel. Bluewater women second at Irishfest MILWAUKEE, WISC. -- Dashwood's Bluewater women's tug of war team tugged their hearts out to a second place finish at the Irishfest competition in Milwaukee, Wisc. on the weekend. On Saturday, the Bluewater women competed in the 560 kg and 520 kg weight classes. Bluewater finished third in the 560 kg and second in the ,520 kg, losing in a close battle to the DJs from Minnesota. On Sunday the Bluewater women had a great day at the rope and went into the final tied for first place, again versus the DJs: Bluewater took the first end of the match but the DJs won the next two pulls to take the win. The Loss put Bluewater in second place for the two-day pull. Both the men's and women's teams are preparing -for the International Plowing Match pull they are hosting in their own community Sept. 25 that will feature sever- al U.S. teams. The Bluewater club welcomes everyone to come out and cheer them Master chipper Exeter's Scott Loosley, 11, came out on top at the Chip Shot Hole -in - one Contest in Grand Bend Sunday evening. Although he missed winning $50,000 for a. hole -in -one on the 50 yard hole, Loosiey took . home a colour TV and plaque for his first place finish.The final numbers aren't in but organizer Dave Sheppard esti- mates the event raised $5,000 for the Grand Bend Nursery School.The other finalists were: second place - Fred Herbert of Sarnia, third - Heath Palen of Port Franks, fourth - Gary Rau of Dashwood, fifth - Jay Bourdeau, London and sixth - Marc Shauvin, London. t (photo/Kate Monk)
