The next step for
Gardner in international
hockey is to make
Canada's senior team.
She hopes to redeye a let-
ter inviting her to the
senior camp tryout as one
of a handful of under 22
players that
will round
out the
senior ros-
ter.
Gardner is
starting her
third year at
Providence's
Brown
University on
a four year
hockey
scholarship.
She • is taking
human biology
and hopes for a career . in
athletic therapy or coach-
ing after graduation.
The series versus Team
USA was made more
interesting for Gardner
with three of her Brown
Bear teammates, most
notably Tara Mounsey
(defence, '98 Nagano
Olympics gold medal win-
ner), suiting up, for the
USA.
Gardner is putting on
another Brown uniform
this year: she recently
made the Ivey League
school's field hockey
team.
Brown field hockey
head coach
Carolan
Norris said
she's
impressed
with
Gardner's
speed and
with a little
work on her
stick skills
(getting out
of ice hockey
mode) ,
Gardner has
the potential to
be a standout field hockey
performer. -
"She's very good,"
Norris .said. "She'll defi-
nitely be a starter -and be
•one of our better players."
Gardner will play either
left- wing or centre for-
ward and Norris expects
Cara Gardner

her to be in on many of
Brown's goals.
The field hockey season
starts on Sept. 11 and
ends Nov. 6. Norris said
the field hockey and ice
hockey seasons only over-
lap for a week so Gardner
is expected to fit in most if
not all of the field hockey
season. -
There's one big differ-
ence between U.S. field
hockey and the Canadian
sport: many U.S. colleges
(including Brown) play on
artificial turf which Is
much faster than natural
grass. '
Gardner paved the way
to U.S.. college success
with a stellar career at
South Huron District High
School, the: London
Devilettes hockey system
and Exeter Area Ringette.
She won SHDHS's female
athlete of the year four
times, was a member of
three OFSAA winning
field hockey .teams,
played . for the Team
Ontario ringette squad
