Times Advocate, 1999-09-01, Page 15Wednesday. September 1:1999 Municipal drains and dit dging influences on fisl*abitat EXETER - The issue' of class authorization for agricultural municipal drains has been the sub- ject of many discussions around municipal coun- cil tables. To help answer these questions, . the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (I O), in cooperation with con- servation authorities have organized a series of information sessions across southwestern Ontario. Locally, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is hosting an information day at the. Parkhill Legion on September 8. The morning session, from 9 a.m. to noon, will provide insight into striking a balance between the need to protect fish habitat and the need for drainage to agricultural lands. Those attending will receive information on the Fisheries Act and the Al3(:A's efforts to classify municipal drains for reviewing potential works. Municipal councillors or planners as well as drainage engineers, superintendents and contractor's are invited to attend. The afternoon session from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. will discuss the low water levels over the last couple of years and the increased need for dredging. Presentations will be made detailing the roles and responsi- bilities for dredging pro- posals and the impacts. on adjacent fish habitat. This information will be of interest to landown- ers, marina operators, engineers and contrac- tors. Pre -registration is required by calling the ABCA at 519-235-2610: There is no cost and lunch will be provided.
