Hard workand
dedication does not
coed
Dear Editor:
We are writing to applaud. the -Stephen, Township
Arena Board for. the obvious lard work and dedica-
tion they are giving their fundraising. campaign.
We participated in the Slowpitch. Tournament on,
the weekend and had a blast contributing- to the
efforts of Jonathan, Glavin's "Barn. Paint: team,
The Arena Board members were also there in full
force in an attempt to give their renovation project
another. financiai Dost.
Earlier~ this: month the Crofton Minor Ball
Association was.., hosting a. Bantam El is
Tournament and two days before the weekend of
the tournament we found ourselves without a group
to run the food booth. In a bit of a panic, we co
tat -ted the Arena Board to see if they. would `he
interested in raising a few more dollars at the girls'
tournament. Needless to say, we were very relieved
when they accepted.
Kerte-fynn Case and the rest other Fundraising
Committee have shown they are determined to turn
their proposed arena expansion project into a reap
ty. Now is the time for residents of Stephen
Township, businesses in this area, friends (past and
present) of the Stephen Thieuship Arena, and oth-
ers who may have a connection to the endless hours
of fun and entertainment that takes place every
season at the arena,tO meet the Arena Board's
challenge. We should not have to wait for someone
to visit us to request a financial commitment.
This is one family that is not going to wait to be
asked. This week we are making our donation to
show our appreciation to those who are spearhead-
ing the project. You too can show. your support and
encouragement by sending your donation directly to
Kerri-Lynn at the Stephen Township Municipal
Office, Crediton, Ontario, NOM 1MO. We hope you
do. (Donations should be made, payable to The
Stephen Township Building Fund.)
Sincerely, BRUCE AND DEB HODGE,

Strong relationship?
TORONTO rhe tic thought
of Ontarians about the separa-
tion of Premier Mike Harris and
his wife will be one of sympathy,
but they should also feel they
have been conned.
The sympathy is because a
breakdown hurts those involved,
and politicians are subject -to
more strains than most, includ-
ing that of being away from
home.
But voters also will remember
the role the premier's wife, Janet, played in the
June campaign when Harris's Tories were re-
elected. She was with him at most major events.
She was seen with the premier when he said his
main goal was to build happy futures for families.
She was with him in school reassuring when he
toldparents he wanted to give themmore power
and a daycare centre where both read stories to
toddlers, and, was pictured with him: at campaign
headquarters.
She was seen 'Wiping tears and leaving the room
when relatives of murder victimortold mowing Ae-
ries supporting his appeal for tougher fedbrat
laws.
She was pictured shaking hands with police
when they backed Harris in saying more effort is
needed to clear streets of squeegee kids and beg-
gars.
eggam.
She was noted, above alb. for being part of
Harris's entourage when it was jostled by demon-
stentors against his unprecedented cuts in ser-
vices.
The night Harris was re-elected he ,
victory to his wife, but this was mostly cauet+,
because his tax cuts clearly won it for him.
But sl helped bear outaan impression he want-
ed to create. Most leaders. take their spouses on
campaigns hoping theywill make them look
warmer, more human and supportive of the fami=-
ly. Harris needed his particularly because some
view hinr'as harsh and, confrontational in pushing
through reforms.
By being there she suggested hers was an exam-
ple of the happy families Harris aimed to create.
She won sympathy for her frank emotion toward
crime victims and a hugei outpouring- when she
was;ostlbd,, although no-atecould cloud there
Was an- attempt to harm her- and she was there' to
Win votes.
Acl}= in all, she helped Harris look kinder, gentler
ante more, human and the average spy next door
he likes -to dawn. he is.
Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty took his wife
Terri on much of his tour. She was pictured walk-
ing arm-in-arm.with him and once; kissing him as
he set off bravely without her.
McGuinty even ha& his mother campaign with
him at one stop, but so did Harris in that he
stopped to visit her on Mother's Day and a photog-
rapher luckily was on hand and the picture was in
newspapers across theprovince.
New Democrat leader Howard Hampton's witb
Shelley Martel also is an MPP and ran again, suc-
cessfully, but they considered it so important the
leader be seen with his wife she broke off cam-
paigning in her own riding several times to l with
him opening the NDP's campaign on the legisla-
ture's front lawn and atother events, usually with
their two children.
Among earlier premiers, Liberal David Petersen..
took his glamorous actress wife Shelly almost
everywhere. She helped project the trendy yuppie
image he wanted together with their children Ben,
Chloe and Adam and dog Blueberry Muffin.
Tory Frank Miller was the only premier who
gave his wife more than a backdrop role in an
election and that was by accident.
When he caught laryngitis and could not. speak
for a day, his wife Ann gave several passable pep
talks, but conceded she hoped he would recover
quickly so -she could_get back to her knitting.
William Davis had no fewer than three pictures
of his wife in his main election pamphlet at : a time
when politicians relied more on mail. John
Robarts and his first wife Norah were known to
have some strain in their marriage late in his pre-
miership, but they stayed officially together until
several years after he retired.
Harris has gone a stage further in that he would
1d
have known his marriage was breaking up, but
had his wife give an impression of a solid relation-
ship to help in an election.
