By Kate Monk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF ZURICH -- Chairman Jody Durand credits the sunshine, 300 volunteers, community members and definitely not last or least, his wife Cheryl with mak- ing Saturday's 34th annu- al Zurich Bean Festival a success. "Even people who (don't have anything to gain help out," Durand told the T -A Monday morning. He- estimates 20,000 : people visited the Huron County village for a day of food and entertainment. •While the final figures aren't available, Durand expects the bean festival committee will be able to donate $6,000 to commu- nity groups s and have money left over forthe "Save ave the Babe" arena fund-raising project. The day's statistics are un village of e for a g impressive r less thanpeople. 1,000 e o le. Volunteers served up 4,000 o mer c pork h ook ed chop and bean dinners. Children could choose from a clown, magic show, midway rides and games and this year marked the 25th anniver- sary of Dr. Wallace's Frog Jumping Contest. Adults could listen to a range of musical enter- tainment, try their luck at bingo or browse the ven- dors' area and car show. There was no shortage of food or hungry people with line-ups at the numer- ous food booths. 4, The com- mittee e made several improve- ments this year to handle the crowds. The shaded area for seniors was increased and the regular eating spaces had more picnic tables. An extra meal serving line was added to speed up the servingprocess b but there were still lon line- 'ups waiting for thefo d to be prepared. By Kate Monk TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND -- Mick • Rapaport says Grand Bend's mayor has a per- sonal vendetta against him and is using his political office to hurt Rapaport's business. Rapaport and his wife Nancy Clement operate Coco's bar on Main St. from Victoria Day week- end to Labour Day. "He's abusing his posi- tion to rule the little king- dom of Grand Bend," Rapaport said of Mayor Cam Ivey. A sign oultstd 1 • .f reads: "We earned this place. My father did not leave me a trust fund." Rapaport told the T -A the sign refers to Ivey and is his way of retaliating for unfair treatment from the village's head of council. In December 1998, Ivey sent a letter to the Liquor and Gaming Commission as the mayor of Grand Bend, complaining about the noise, glass on outdoor patios and fights at Coco's. In August, the province suspended Coco's liquor license for 14 days for per- mitting the removal of liquor from the premises d er*nittin : drunken- ness, quarrelsome and violent disorderly conduct to occur on the premises.. Rapaport says he expects his taxes will increase and he'll get more visits from the liquor inspectors because of Ivey's personal dislike for him. Rapaport said many other business owners also feel contempt for Ivey but are afraid to speak out. "He doesn't understand there are people out there working for a living," Rapaport said of Ivey. Ivey was not available for comment when con- tacted by the T -A . Ok •
