Buddy program
The Hensall Guides held their wrap-up Buddies Program evening at the
Queensway Retirement Home in Hensall last.Monday night and received their

gram which saw the girls spend time with retirement home residents once a

Hensall's Senior of theYe r' honoured

HENSALL CORRESPONDENT
HENSALL - The Village
of Hensall hosted . a
Community Dinner. on
June 25. Local service
groups with participation
and co-operation from
several additional groups
organized the event.
Several disappointed peo-
ple had to be turned away
in the days preceding the
event as it was a sell-out.
The event was present-
ed in conjunction with the
International Year of
Older Persons. Pirie
Mitchell of Hensall United
Church was guest speak-
er. He spoke about the
past, present and future
of Hensall and beyond, to
the crowd of more than
250. He noted his sur-
prise at being asked to be
a guest speaker at a com-
munity event, having
been in the community
for just six short months.
Also entertaining
throughout the evening
was Master of
•�-• Ceremonies, Bob
Heywood. • Heywood tied
together various humor-
ous aspects of aging
through both song and
verse.
The organizing commit-
tee was honoured to have
in attendance Gladys
Petty Smith. She is the
great niece of George and
James Petty, the founders
of Hensall. Gladys was
born in Hensall in
January 1899. She
attended Hensall Public
School, and later, the
Clinton School of
Commerce. She married
George Smith at her par-
ents' home in Hensall in
1927. Her home was then
established in St. Marys,
where George was prac-
ticing dentistry. She still
F:.. resides in St. Marys, how-
ever with the assistance
of her family, she makes a
trip to Hensall once a
week to purchase her
groceries.
Several members of the
community were
acknowledged by various
organizations, with a spe-
cial certificate of recogni-
tion. These were: Dorothy

Adkins, M. Craig, H.
Ferrigno, C. Knight, J.
O'Conner, R. Packham, R.
Peck, D. Travers, W. Bell,

ognized by. the Hensall

In addition to the previ-
ous certificates, the
Hensall Parks Board pre-
sented Volunteer of the
Year Awards.
Acknowledged were:
Gerry Neilands (Civic
Volunteer of the Year),
Steve Bedard (Sport
Volunteer of the Year)
and Lillian . Beer
(Humanitarian Volunteer
of the Year).
There was also a pre-
sentation to the "Senior of
the Year." For the past
three years in Hensall in
conjunction with the
Provincial Seniors'
Secretariat, an outstand-
ing Senior member of the
community has been cho'
sen to be acknowledged.
This program was initiat-
ed in 1997, with a presen-
tation to Iva Reid; in
1998, Helen McKay was
acknowledged. Betty
Simmons was chosen for
recognition in 1999. She
is an active member of
Seniors' activities, a
Legion Executive mem-
ber, involved with the
United Church Board, a
Legion Auxiliary member,
a board member with the
H.S.H.A.S., and a
Queensway volunteer.
She dedicates countless
hours to the community.
She was presented with
the "Senior of the Year"
honour at the community
dinner.
At Hensall ::United
Church on Sunday, Pirie
Mitchell was the minister
with Mark Garlough pre-
siding at the organ.
Thirty new hymn books
purchased by the memor-
ial fund were dedicated
and two hymn books
were in memory of Bev
Hamilton's parents.
On July 4 a collection of
non-perishable food will
be accepted. Bible school
will beheld at Hensall
United Church from July
5 to 9. Registration will be
from 8:30 to 9 a.m. on
July 5. Classes will run
from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each
day. For information call

Hensall Carmel
Presbyterian Church wel-
comed Rev. John Neilson
as guest minister on
Sunday. He conducted the
communion service.
Serving communion were
Robert Bell, Al Hoggarth,
Bob Taylor and Harry
Moir. Hensall Carmel
Presbyterian Church will
be closed for the month of
July.
On July 10 and 11 the
Hensall and District
Horticultural Society will
hold their third annual
Country Home and
Garden Tour. Several
artists will be displaying
their talents.
It's an opportunity to
see ice -sculpting at
IceCulture in Hensall.
Gardens will be on dis-
play in Hensall, Varna, St.
Joseph Shores, and the
surrounding area.

THAMES ROAD - Carolyn Johns and
Jessica Bray of the Youth Class opened
the Sunday School Celebration Sunday
service with a sing song.
Rev. Carter gave the welcome and the
announcements.
Megan Parker led in the call to wor-
ship. Everyone sang "Part of the Family"
accompanied by Agnes Bray on the
organ. Jessica Bray led in the prayer in
unison.
Seals and certificates were presented.
Maggie Miller and Kristy Bray read
scriptures. Rev. Carter gave a message
entitled "Moo, Meow and Oink" relating
to the animals that were in Noah's Ark.
Members of the Sunday School sang
"Sing •a. Rainbow".
The offering, pennies, Canadian Tire
money and offering for the Sunday
School were taken by Vanessa Bray,
Courtney Smith, Megan Pavkeje, Evelyn
Johns and Robin McKnight.
"Magic Penny" was sung accompanied
by Agnes Bray on the piano. Megan
Parker led in the commissioning and
benediction.
Vanessa Bray gave the invitation and
the grace. The church was decorated
with many stuffed animals, live birds,
kittens, hamsters, doves and a white
rabbit which made it like Noah's Ark.
A potluck lunch was served. The diplo-
ma and seal recipients were read out by
superintendent Kathy Bray and handed
out by Vanessa Bray.

Life and work of the •
congregation
Hymn Sing Sunday will be held July
18.
Vacation Bible School is planned for
July 25 with the theme "Under. God's
Rainbow". Registration will be at 11:30
a.m. Please bring a lunch. The program
is for ages four and up. Those under
four years of age are welcome if accom-
panied by a parent. Supper will be pro-
vided at 5:30 p.m. Please pick up a reg-
istration form and give it to anyone you
think would be interested. The leaders
need four to five inch glass jars with an
opening big enough for a tea lite to fit
into.
Sunday School will begin again on
September 12.
The U.C.W. will meet September 7 on
a trip to Blyth Theatre.
Personals
Get. well wishes are extended to Brad
Cann who broke his ankle last Sunday
night.
The Usborne Guild comprised of Jean
Hodgert on the piano, Harry Jeffery on
the banjo, Ken Duncan and Bill Rohde,
played at Exeter Villa on Monday
evening.
Norman and. Lori Lynn Lauzon,
Katrina and Carrington of Timmins are
visiting with their parents Jack and
Ferne Stewart.
