Couture selected foreite pro
hockey development pro

Logan Couture has made another
Important step in his hockey career.
Couture, 10, has been scouted,
selected and invited by the Toronto-
based Pro Hockey Development Group
to play fortheir major
novice team for the rest of
the summer.
The season culminates
with a trip to Edmonton
for the premier novice
hockey tournament in
North America, the Brick
Super Novice Invitational
Hockey Tournament, from
Aug. 4-9.
The team will play in
three Ontario tournaments
and attend a week-long
training camp in Toronto
prior to the Edmonton
trip.
Couture's father, Chet,
said the nucleous of the
team is comprised of Toronto -area.
players but two are from Brantford,
one from North York and then there's
Logan.
"All of the players play winter hockey
at the AAA level except Logan, making
his selection to this elite team repre-
senting Ontario a significant accom-
plishment for him," Chet said.
Other teams in the Edmonton tour-
ney are Vancouver, Seattle, Los
Angeles (Wayne Gretzky's son plays
for the team), Western Canada Native
all-stars, Calgary, Edmonton,
Saskatoon, Winnipeg,
Minnesota, Detroit,
Connecticut and Boston.

Though excited about the
opportunity, Logan will
have to put his first love,
baseball, on the back burn-
er this summer. Couture
has won his age group in
the national Hit -Run -Throw skillscom-
petition for the past two years and
anticipates competing again. Couture
is also a talented lacrosse player and
cross country runner.

Cooke has a suggestion for those who still feel that way.
"I would challenge any athlete to come out and play in
a weekend . tournament and see how they feel for the
second day of the tournament:"
Cooke will next host the Labatt Blue Grand Bend Pro -
Beach Open this weekend (see sidebar) and later this:
summer will attend the Pan Am Games to work with
high performance teams.
Cooke said volunteers are needed for scoring, lining,.

ers or, being a ball person at the Pro Beach Open -this

Grand Bend will host the Ontario Beach Volleyball
Championships Aug. 7-8 marking the last major beach
v -ball event of the season for the area.
For more information on the beach volleyball league
and the youth clinics, call Cooke at the above number.
Cooke is also offering a level 1 technical beach volley-
ball coaching course. The course is set for July 7-8, 5
p.m. -9:30 p.m., at Goderich District Collegiate Institute.
Cost is $70 if the coach already has level 1 technical for
indoor v -ball or $90 if the coach doesn't have their level
1 indoor. Call Cooke to register.
Crediton': Graydon Lord, 14; hts his Angers do the
talking during the Region 3 youth qualifying tourna-
ment at Grand Bend beach Saturday.Those advancing
from the tourney will represent this region at the
Ontario Regional Games In Ottawaduring the third
weekend of July. Unfortunately Lord and his team-
mate Mark Lye didn't advance.
