GRANTON -- The Granton sewer project can go
ahead after the government rejected an appeal by one
resident requesting an environmental assessment.
Township council received the news of the rejection
of Charles Hayden's appeal, or "bump up" request, on
June 8, almost two weeks later than council was told it
would get an answer from the province.
Council's next step in getting the project going, which
, sewer project continues
was supposed to start in March, is an open house pub-
lic meeting on June 23 at the Granton fire hall from 2
p.m. -4 p.m. and 7 p.m. -9 p.m. The meeting, said Lucan
Biddulph administrator Ran Reymer, is a chance to put
plans for the sewer project in front of the people and
speak to them about easements.
Engineering plans for the project are now being
finalized and will eventually go to council for approval
after the engineer and public works stall has looked at
them.
Because the project has started late, it can't be fin-

BRUCEFIELD — The Brucefield Fire . Department
has been kept very busy lately.
On Sunday at 9:22 a.m. the fire department was
called to a barn fire at Bob Broadfoot's west of
Brucefield on County Rd. 3. '
"When we got there the building was beyond saving,"
said Brucefield Fire Chief Bob Wilson. "It was totally
destroyed."
The 20 member fire department spent three hours
putting out the fire and ensuring three adjacent barns
and a drive shed were saved.
More than 300 pigs perished in the fire but Wilson is
still waiting for Broadfoot to submit a final livestock
inventory list before the number is confirmed.
Because the fire was "simply too far gone" when the
fire department arrived, Wilson said the cause of the
fire will probably remain unknown.
House fire
Firefighters were called to a fire at an unoccupied
house in Brucefield around 5 p.m. Monday. A neigh-
bour made the call after seeing smoke coming from
the eavestroughs.
Wilson said the house, belonging to Helen Higgart,
was being used for storage.
Firefighters managed to save the structure by con-
taining the blaze to a back room of the house. The rest
of the building experienced smoke damage.
"Today worked out well," said Wilson. "It was a good
save."
While Wilson said` -int was too early to calculate dam-
ages he said the fire was caused by an extension cord.
Damage was not known at press.
