Times Advocate, 1999-06-16, Page 4Hospital hires new physiotherapist By Scott Nixon TIKES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER -- Better health care and a lighter workload for staff are two results of the hiring of a new physiotherapist at the South Huron Hos- pital, according to the hospital's director of physiotherapy. lan McCrae said until the hospital hired Lon- don native and former Lucan resident Krista Geiger in May, the hos- pital had gone 4 1/2 years without a staff physiotherapist due to budget cutbacks. "It was just over- whelming," McCrae said of being the only physio- therapist at the hospital. In audition to the heavy workload, McCrae said at one point there was a waiting list of six months for care. The physiotherapy de- partment was also forced to close when McCrae would go on vacation. Now it can stay open, he said. He said Geiger's hiring will mean shorter wait- ing periods and give him- self and Geiger more time to spend with each patient. Geiger, 23, studied at the University of Western Ontario for five years. She said her major inter- ests are spot therapy and orthopedics 414 first became interested In the subject in high scht Oakridge Secondary School is London. South Huron Hospital site administrator Janice Cosgrove admitted many people in the community had been concerned about tl . hospital's physiothera1 y de- partment because they couldn't get "timely ac- cess" to care. She said the hospital has known for years that it was a problem but it was a question of getting the proper funds to im- prove the department. That funding came with a onesper cent in- crease from the province in the hospital's base budget. The hospital also reallocated some other money in its budget to put towards paying for a new physic therapist. Even with the addi- tional funding from the province, Cosgrove said the hospital is still telling the Ministry of Health it is having problems bal- ancing its budget. Cosgrove said while the position wasn't ad- vertised, the hospital was receiving applica- tions from physio- therapists anyway, be- cause this is the time of year when recent gradu- ates are looking for jobs. Geiger was a good choice, . Cosgrove said, because she worked for the hospital on a work pcement in January. "I'm really pleased then we were able to Standing with South Huron's director of phys- iotherapy Ian McCrae is new South Huron physiotherapist Krista Geiger, who started at the hospital in May. In other South Huron Hospital news, the hos- pital has hired a nurse practitioner who will be coming to ' the hospital sometime this summer. Nurse practitioners are qualified for more re- sponsibilities than reg- istered nurses, including prescribing some drugs and should also lighten the workload of some staff members. The community is also continuing its doctor re- cruitment efforts, and will be going on a med- ical recruitment tour of universities in the `fall to try to convince medical graduates to work in Ex- eter.
