Mid -Elgin Redwings win
second 'AAA' tourney
TORONTO - The Mid -Elgin
Redwings Novice hockey team
captured their second straight `AAA'
tournament title by winning the Lakeshore
Thunder International in Toronto May 28-30.
The Redwings beat the Toronto Pro Hockey
Development team 6-2 in the final. Other scores
were a round-robin3-3 tie versus Ottawa and
wins of 7-0 over Dundas Bulldogs and 7-0 over
Toronto Serengeti.
The Redwings beat the Sudbury Vipers 11-2 in
the quarter -final and then whipped the
Mississauga Senators 8-0 in the semi-final.
Local players scoring for the Redwings include
Birr's Logan Couture (a Lucan Minor Hockey
product) with 15 goals and nine assists over the
tourney and Danny Ryan who scored five goals
and helped out on nine others.
The Mid -Elgin Tyke Redwings also played in
the tourney but lost a heart -breaking semi-final
game 5-4 in the fourth overtime period.
Local players on the Tyke team include Jarrett
Johns and Brett Overholt from Exeter Minor
Hockey and Judson Couture from Lucan Minor
Hockey.
Both Redwing teams will end the spring 'AAA'
tourney season in the Champions Choice Hockey
Academy tournament in Toronto June 11-13.
Morenz Banquet to honour
Mitchell's best hockey player
MITCHELL - Find out who is Mitchell's best
young hockey player while listening to former
Maple Leaf Ron Ellis at the third annual Howie
Morenz Memorial Banquet June 11 at the
Mitchell &District Community Centre.
Three girls and five boys are nominated for
Mitchell's top hockey player. Guest speaker Ellis,
currently an ambassador to the Hockey Hall of
Fame will be joined by former Canadian
women's hockey team captain and gold medalist
Sue Scherer.
The social hour is 6-7 p.m., the dinner from 7-
8 p.m. and the program and award
presentations to follow.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children
under 12. For ticket information, call Al

Local players make OHL draft
Two players from the Times -Advocate
coverage area were taken in the OHL draft in
Brampton over the weekend.
Brucefield's Aaron Lobb, a right winger, was
the London Knight's second pick. Lobb, a Huron -
Perth `AAA' Lakers product, was taken in the
second round and 32nd overall.
Hensall's Jeff Campbell, a former Exeter Jr. D
Hawk, was taken in the seventh round and
146th overall by Sudbury. Campbell was an all-
star with the Strathroy Jr. B Rockets last season.
Varna crokinolers shine at Worlds
TAVISTOCK - Three Varna Crokinole Club
players made their communities proud with top
finishes at the World Crokinole Championship at
Tavistock Saturday.
Raymond and Jason Beierling placed first in
doubles while Exeter's Joe Fulop placed second
in singles.
Cents in
scoreless tie
DELHI -- The Exeter
Centennials First Division
WOSL team are happy
with a scoreless draw
versus host Delhi/Simcoe
Athletics Friday.
"Our guys marked fan-
tastic," Cents coach John
Rasenberg said, noting
last week's 5-1 home loss
to the Latinos. "I was
happy with the game."
Rasenberg said his team
generated a couple more
scoring chances than the
opposition.
Exeter keeper George
McEwan was solid
between the pipes and
came up with a couple
good saves. Rasenberg
said Adam Jean played a
great game at full back.
The Cents have a bye
this week and next travel
to Chatham on June 18.
Royals still
undefeated
EXETER - The Exeter
Royals junior men's fast -
ball team kept their
record spotless with a 3-1
win over Lynden last
week.
Exeter opened the scor-
ing in the fourth inning as
left fielder Dan Storey led
off with a walk, stole sec-
ond and scored on a sin-
gle by shortstop Steve
Leonhandt.
The Royals scored two
more runs in the sixth
inning as Storey scored
on a Gavin Snell triple.
Snell then scored on a
passed ball.
The winning pitcher
was Steve Cook who
pitched seven innings,
allowing one unearned
run on five hits. He struck
out 13 batters and walked
none.
The Royals attended the
Melbourne tournament
on the weekend. Exeter
beat Moraviatown 6-5
and lost 2-1 to Merlin and
7-3 to Oneida.

Masters sunk 3-2
LUCAN - The Exeter Masters soccer
team played a sound game but still lost
3-1 at home to London Marconi Friday.
Julio Farfan scored for Exeter in the
first half. The Marconi then scored two
quick goals before the end of the second
half. London added an insurance mark-
er in the second half.
The Masters are 0-3 for the season
and next travel to London to face
Hispanic International Friday. Exeter
will then participate in a tournament in
Goderich Saturday.
Exeter's next home game is versus
Strathroy June 18, 7 p.m.
