Arena expansion gets council commitment
By Craig Bradford

HURON PARK — The
long anticipated Stephen
Township Arena expan-
sion project got a healthy
boost from council last
month.
Council passed a motion
at its April 12 meeting to
match any private fund-
raising dollars three to
one up to a $300,000
maximum.
Stephen councillor and
arena board chairperson
Drew Robertson, who
made the motion, said it
is important council lends
its support to the project
to get the ball rolling. He
said improving the arena
is a key part of the com-
munity's fixture.
"It's an extremely good
ice pad, one of the best in
southern .Ontario,"
Robertson said of the
rink. "It could easily be
an integral part of a
sports complex (along
with the former college
facilities and Huron Park
Rec Centre)."

mated $460,000-
$550,000 arena expan-
sion through its five-year
capital project budget

projects.
Not every councillor
was in favour of
Robertson's motion. In
fact, a similar motion ear-
lier this year was voted
down.
That motion called for
council to commit
$250,000 to the project
without a rider involving
private donations.
Stephen Reeve Harvey

both motions, said he is in
favour of an arena expan-

detailed plan before sign-
ing the cheque.

time had come for council
to make a move.

s steal irreplaceable keepsake

EXETER --- Vandals
have robbed an Exeter
family of an irreplaceable
keepsake.
Since moving to Exeter
in 1988 Wendy and
Trevor Boyle have
endured countless acts of
vandalism to their 240
William St. property but
this time they've. had
enough.
Last month an invalu-
able bell chime was stolen
from their porch. The
chimes were given to
their son Joshua when
they adopted him in Peru
In 1995.
The 18 -bell hand -paint-
ed terra cotta chimes
were made by a five-year-
old Peruvian boy. The boy
asked the Boyles to hang
the chimes at their front
door to ring a welcome to.
everyone just as they had
welcomed Joshua into
their own home.
"We're so upset they're
gone," said Wendy Boyle.
"They were so beautiful."
Boyle hopes they will be
returned but suspects the -
chimes have already been
destroyed.
"I just want to know if
someone swept them up
... someone has had to
have seen them. We just
want to know if they are
gone," she said. "It makes
us angry not knowing
what happened to them."
To add insult to injury,
vandals attempted oto steal
another chime from their
porch - this past Saturday
evening. r -
Boyle explained they
had just replaced the bell
chimes earlier in the day
with clay birds purchased
on another trip to Pera
when they adopted their
daughter Vanessa.
"They hadn't even been
up a full day," said Boyle.
Luckily thieves were
foiled by a locking pin
that secured the clay
birds to their porch.
However, the vandals
knocked over their plants
instead.
